Started my period!!!?

Hey Ladies!

So I’ve been on the progesterone only pill a little over a month ago, and I take it without breaks. I’ve mapped out my cycles in the past, and this is exactly when I was supposed to start this month.Symptoms are similar to period and bleeding is dark/heavy. Is this normal???

I've been put on that and I've been bleeding now for over two weeks, but they did warn me that this might happen until it settles in. I'd say yours is normal, but i have read that if the bleeding is too much they can put you on two a day. So perhaps get in touch with your GP and ask. Sending you a big hug too x

I have regular periods when I take the progesterone only pill back to back. That and the other side effects (mental health) stop me taking it.

Happy to know I’m not crazy, but also feeling distraught. My mental health has been getting worse and the side effects are awful. My bleeding is basically as heavy as my regular periods. I want to stop the pill but don’t want my pain to spiral 😢 are you on a different pill now? Or just stopped taking birth control all together? Hope you are doing better and sorry that you had to go through that❤️‍🩹

Hiya! I have been on the progesterone only pill for over three months now and my periods have now stopped. I was bleeding like crazy for weeks on end when I started, and the doctors advised me it’s normal to have irregular bleeding and periods while you’re first taking it. It varies but apparently it can take up to 12 months for you to stop having periods, and some people keep having light ones. However for me and lots of other people, it seems 3 months is the magic number 😉

That’s what I heard too, is 3 months! Did the side effects get worse or better for you? I have PMDD on top of everything and I feel like my mental has been getting worse since getting on it. Heard from some ladies that it took finding the right pill for them too. I just had my lap 7 weeks ago, so I’m sure my body and hormones are all over the place but this is so overwhelming!! Thank you so much for your response 💛

Everyone has a different reaction to different birth controls, however it often takes your body a couple months to acclimate to the new pills.

I would be careful of taking too much progesterone as some recommend because you can actually bleed daily with too much. I had the liletta iud to help control bleeding and I bled a little every day for 2 years until it got taken out. I however, have severe endometriosis and cannot take estrogen due to migraines.

Thank you for your reply! 💛That is so interesting and something that I wish I knew beforehand. I tried a combined pill before my lap and it was the same thing basically. My mood was all over the place and I knew I had to stop it before it got worse. I’m wondering if I should ask my Dr. to test my hormone levels? I have PMDD as well, so I’m wondering if that has anything do with the heightened symptoms😢

Potentially. I also have PMDD. I have used almost everything under the sun while looking for something that works. Right now I'm on Orlissa for the endo and progesterone... however, it is not to control periods.

Have you tried non pill options? When I was younger I had some success with the nuvaring and nexplanon. The nexplanon being the easier of the two, but requires a small incision. The nuva ring can be used without the placebo week to try to reduce/remove any periods.

the only thing I haven’t tried is Nuva ring! Everything gave me terrible side effects. My experience on orlissa was a complete nightmare. I feel like I’m running out of options 😣

I obviously don't know what your plans for the future are, but I know when they do a laprascopy for me, I'm going to have them do a hysterectomy as well. I have Ehlers Danlos, so I actually can't just get a hysterectomy very easily due to potential complications (risk v benefit for surgeons), but maybe it's an option for you? Obviously if you want kids, it's not an option.

I would like to have kids(at least one). Have been hoping that I have a small window of time still to do so😓 I’ve been so adamant of having kids and it’s heartbreaking.

I’m very very sorry to hear about that and hope that everything will go well!

I've looked at some only progesterone pills and I'm like hell no (side effects on the list are too bad)!

These side effects are the worst but I’m so scared to just stop taking it 😢 but my mental health is so important!!! We can never win it seems!

You can take a pill containing both oestrogens + progesterones.

I actually started with the combination pill before lap, and it had also sent me through the roof with the mental side effects. I’m now realizing why I stopped taking the pill in my late teens/early 20’s! Tried every birth control but depo and the ring.

Well, I also got that with the first pill. It means that the dosage is too strong. You've got different pills with a lower dosage and you've got no side effects (except stopping periods each X months).

Not what you're looking for?
