Mirena coil and double desogestrel. Is it too much?

Overtherainbow123 profile image

hi, first time posting. Short version - I currently have the coil in and my dr has just told me to double my desogestrel. Firstly, I’m worried about the safety of this? Secondly I really don’t feel I’m coping with the hormone overload. Has anybody else had this treatment before? Is it sustainable? Will it get better?! (I’m 2/3 weeks in and the mood swings, depression, headaches, hot flushes, dizzy spells, tiredness etc brought on by doubling the pill doesn’t seem to be going anywhere)

Hi,

Did you ever get this resolved or did it get better?

I struggle with depression and have been told to double up on my drsogestrel at the moment too. I've had an appointment today with my Gynaecologist who has also suggested the coil and taking the tablets. I've noticed recently my mood hasn't been the greatest but I don't know if that's the hormones or just the circumstances at the moment but I'm a bit concerned also with pumping myself full of hormones too so not sure if the coil would be the best option for me.

hey, so sorry to hear what you’re going through, it’s so rubbish!

I pushed through the best I could but it was way too much for me, I really wasn’t coping - all the extra hormones and symptoms were very very depressing. I went down to just one pill a day plus the coil (I’ve always doubled up on hormones) but still found it extremely difficult to cope. So now, whilst I’m waiting for another appointment with my gynaecologist I am just taking the pill every other day. (I haven’t had this cleared by him to do, I just couldn’t cope a minute longer with the hormones!) I am now considering a hysterectomy, because I’ve exhausted all other options and hormones are really really starting to disagree with me now!

One thing I would suggest, that did help for a bit is acupuncture. Not to help with the pain (although maybe it will!) but to focus on helping the depression and hormonal imbalance. Just a thought.

Wishing you all the best!
