Bleeding while on dienogest

Hi everyone

I have just gone through a laparoscopy to remove a large cyst (>7cm) and lesions through ethanol scleratherapy (new method that avoids the excision from ovary, had to do it in France). My surgeon has prescribed me daily 2mg Dienogest saying this should prevent having periods… only i have bleeding for +9 days, although very light (nothing compared to the bleeding i had before) and dark colour. Anyone who is on this treatment and has experienced this? I am not sure if this is something normal as my body adjusts to the hormone or i should take action? Surgeon says wait and see … but I am completely horrified at the idea of the cyst growing again / having to go through this surgery again.

Hi I'm on dienogest 2mg also and the same happened to me but I bled for two weeks I'm on my second month of pills and doing brilliantly on them havnt had another bleed since but will wait and see..my consultant also told me at the time of prescribing these that they would stop my bleeding also...but in the side effect leaflet it says bleeding/ spotting so don't know what to think really...

thank you for your reply, it's reassuring. It has been 2 weeks now of light dark bleeding so I am hoping it will stop

I've been on it since September and yes I had frequent light bleeds of dark blood in the beginning. It thins the lining of your uterus so I guess that's the process. So far I've only had a few days of spotting/bleeding in the last 6months. Hopefully yours will settle to soon.

thank you for the reply ! the thing I find reassuring is that if it's dark blood then it's probably old blood... so as you say, it's just the process? hoping it will stop soon and all the best for you
