crippling period pain… but very little blood?

hi all,

i’m used to having excruciating pain and incredibly heavy bleeding during my periods. i have been on lots of different pills over the last 4 years or so, i am currently taking cerazette which has stopped my periods for the last 5 months. yesterday i woke up with awful period pain but very little bleeding. today i am still in the same boat. the pain is indescribable. i expected to get a period at some point but i didn’t think it would be this soon- or that the pain would be so bad. i am sort of getting by on lots of painkillers but i just wanted to ask whether others have experienced this? and if so, what action did you take?

i don’t know whether i should go back to taking provera as it’s a much higher dose… i still have a few packs left. i just can’t stand this pain.

This has also happened to me. I was on microgynon for about 15 years and after two children tried levest. For the years since I had my daughter my period pain got worse and worse…and then worse again! So bad I could not move for two or three days each month. I got fobbed off with pain killers which would barely touch the pain and I felt so miserable. But like you, periods were so light.

It has never been explained to me but I saw a specialist who said I ‘probably’ have endo, and the pill was reducing the other symptoms (of which I had a few, ibs type issues, bloating etc). She thought the bleeding may be light because of the endo and where it was??

I have since had the mirena coil fitted. As I am 40 and don’t want any more children this was a good option for me.

Having the coil has completely stopped my periods and I am pain free for the first time in years.

I hope you can get some answers soon.

hi there,

thank you so much for your reply! i’m sorry you went through that, but i’m glad you found a solution! i had a laparoscopy in feb and was told that i had some adhesions but they couldn’t confirm or deny that i had endo? so i’m not really sure what to do.. i’m not even 20 yet and i really don’t want children right now but i don’t know what i’ll think in 10 years… for that reason i don’t know whether the coil would be right for me at the moment. but it’s very interesting that it stopped your periods! wishing you many more pain-free years :)

It’s so hard to know where to turn, but I found I had to be really persistent to get to see a specialist, so you have done well to get as far as a laparoscopy. Can you ask for a second opinion on that if It was inconclusive?

Living off painkillers all the time is no way to live and I could never find much info on extreme pain but light periods.

Really hope you can get some more answers x

i’m very grateful i was able to go private to have it done, it (only!) took about 6 months of asking for my gynae to agree, whereas on the nhs i am 99% sure i would’ve been denied. i would definitely be interested in having someone look at it again but over the past few months i’ve been treated very badly by multiple doctors and so i’m always nervous that a new doctor won’t listen to me. there is a shocking lack of information about these types of concerns, even though millions of women seem to be affected by them, it’s really quite worrying. thank you so much x

Hi there, sorry your going through this. I go through the same pain outside my period week and then when my period is here it’s more pain and lots of blood. I started going to accupunture and honestly it’s been amazing. I was advised there was a lot of blood trapped and accupunture helped release all this blood. Hope this helps 😊

that’s so interesting! i was advised that acupuncture may help but i haven’t really thought about it much as i have a really bad fear of needles… i think i will reconsider. thank you for your advice!
