Arrived at hospital at 7am, got all gowned and stockinged up, they told me I was first on the list and would be going in at 9am... Didn't hear anything all day, the nurses couldn't answer any questions, and then at about 4:30pm (having eaten and drunk nothing all day) I got told my op had been cancelled due to lack of theatre space :(((( They wouldn't even give me paracetamol for the enormous stress/dehydration headache because "it has to be prescribed"...
So frustrating, I had planned everything around it, got the time off work (I am a teacher so this is not easy). Now I have been off work for a week isolating but have no sick note to show for it, and have to reorganise everything. Also got all mentally prepared for the op, and finding out what is going on inside me, and now feel so distressed about it not having happened.

Oh god this is just horrid, it has such a ripple impact in so many areas and I’m sorry you’ve had this experience. You should be able to request written confirmation of the expectation to isolate prior to the op and the original op appointment letter as supporting documentation. They should also be able to give a couple lines confirming it was cancelled and why. Sometimes it’s worth emphasis that the GP has also requested this as have work and they may get it to you sooner - best bet is to follow it up directly with the medical secretary for whoever was due to complete your op. I hope this helps a little and even if you’re back at work now having not had the op don’t forget to pace yourself after the emotional upheaval and also dehydration!
Thats so awful! I would look at complianing through the PALS .Did you get a new date? You just be sooo upset and frustrated I would be going mental! Hugs!!!!
This happened to me last week too (went in 7am left 6pm!) and I was absolutely devistated. I recommend a good sleep to recover from the stress, dehydration and if you're anything like me cracking headache (I slept for 14 hours straight when I got home).
I want to reassure you that I got a new date on the Friday (lap was supposed to be Wednesday) and fortunately had my successful surgery yesterday. Because I was cancelled I was first on the list. I didn't have the same surgeon, but she also had an endo specialism so I didn't have an issue with that fortunately.
It's a horrible feeling, but make sure you take the next few days to recover. I think I felt worse after my cancelled lap than my actual lap! I hope you get your surgery soon x
This happened to me when I went in for my hysterectomy, I felt so ill from being left all day with no food, self employed so had to sort all that out beforehand. I complained to PALS and they assured me the following month the op would go ahead which it did but it was so stressful and upsetting as you hear yourself up mentally. I really hope it happens soon and all goes well XX
Really sorry to hear this! It’s awful as you get yourself all psyched up for it! Just found out my op is cancelled for tomorrow. Gutted. The bowel surgeon can’t make it so waiting for a re-scheduled date and I’ve no clue when that will be this was already a late date and I was slotted in so can’t help thinking it’ll be ages and it’s making so sad! But it’s even worse for you, as you were there all ready and waiting, you must be gutted too! Take care and hope they get you a new date soon!
