Catheter for laparoscopy surgery
Hi I only got told I would get a catheter in hours after my surgery if i couldn’t urinate. I just woke up with a pad/pants on 😀x
When I had my second lap I was told they'd emptied my bladder during surgery but I didn't wake with a catheter in, just had a huge pad on laying on something that looked liked a puppy dog training mat!! There was a lady on my ward who had to get one put in through the night because she was having problems, but they took it out before she went home the following day. I would have thought they'd emptied it though to give them more room during lap.
Hi, I have woken up with a catheter after a laparoscopy. It was a long and complex surgery as my organs were also attached with adhesions so I don’t know if that made a difference but it was removed after a couple of days.
Hi,I woke up after surgery with a catheter, i had no idea this would be needed as this was never discussed, but as I had a lot of Endo to remove and uterus stuck to bowels, endo in POD, abdomen etc, my surgery went on for a while. I remember the surgeon saying something afterwards about it being there to allow my bladder to wake up again and get going. It was only there for a few days while I recovered in hospital..
.I also remember the nurse needing to be reminded to empty it as well, it was so full it was almost bursting and I couldnt wee anymore and i remember the relief when she emptied it!

Hi! I had a laparoscopy for an ovarian cyst a few weeks ago and was told by my surgeon that I would have a catheter during the surgery but that since the surgery was not that long (approx 1 hour), they would remove it before the anaesthetic wore off as this reduces the risk of infection.
So, I had a catheter during the surgery but I didn’t have one when I woke up or when I went under.
Hope this helps!
Hi! Thank you for replying. How is your recovery? And how big was your cyst? Xx
So far it’s been smooth sailing. A bit of soreness around the wounds but nothing major. The general anaesthetic made me quite sleepy, but I was on sick leave for 2 weeks and that was perfect to regain my strength and to rest.
The cyst had actually ruptured (that’s what brought me to hospital in the first place), so I don’t know how big it was, but it was still bleeding 30+ hours after the initial episode of excruciating pain.
As soon as I woke up from surgery, I felt immediate relief - I had been in constant pain for the day and a bit leading up to the surgery.
They took a biopsy of the cyst, so still waiting on results from that. But they found deep endometriosis on my utero-sacral ligament while they were in there.
I’m sorry if you are in a similar position. Cyst pain can be awful. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help! Xx
Hi there, sorry I cannot answer your question, however just FYI.,my wife struggled from ovarian cysts. She started drinking tbsp morning and night of Bragg’s Organic Apple cider and the cysts dissolved within a month or two. She wanted surgery as a last resort. The doctors were amazed to say the least.
Hope this info will help you, while trying to find your answer.
Hi there, I don’t believe I had a catheter put in. They had me use the restroom multiple times before I went in for surgery and I believe the surgery was relatively quick. I do have stage 4 endo, bowel adhesions and my Fallopian tube & multiple cysts were removed
I had a catheter fitted, but like the others, I had long complex surgery! I also had to have both kidneys stented! The catheter was a god send, because my kidneys bled badly from the stents! Without the catheter I’d have been up and down for days peeing out the blood! I was strapped to the bed also with a machine that stopped clots forming in my legs! So it depends! For a simple cyst removal, probably not! For extensive, major surgery, definitely! Xx
