Is a Ultrasound the normal process for detecting Endometriosis ?

Hi, I have noticed a few mentions on here about Mr Challoub, I cancelled last week's appointment, as I was self isolating, because of my husbands cough etc, anyhow, I now have an appointment in 2 days, with this gentleman, and do actually feel reassured by your comments. I think my situation is not dissimilar to some of yours, although I was admitted recently with Appendicitis, and the CT scan showed thickening of the womb. I have mixed thoughts about it all, as I have swung from thinking is it IBS or just some horrible menstrual problems, and one of the worst symptoms I've have in the last couple of months is bad constipation. From what your saying, I am beginning to think endometriosis now ? Is it the norm for a ultrasound ? (sorry this is so lengthy).

Hi I hope you are well. I thought a laparoscopy was the only way to diagnose endo? A scan may pick up other problems you are having but I know I never had a scan to see if I had endometriosis. In fact I have had 2 laps the 2nd one was to see how much it had spread. Good luck with your appointment,I hope you get some answers 💛💛

Hi, ok angiec, your guidance and support means a lot. It is a very daunting time generally, coupled with the unknown of investigation/diagnosis/treatment. forums like this help massively. I hope to be posting something positive on here very soon !

My first step 6 years ago was to have an ultrasound to rule other things out and I think in some cases they can see indicators of endometriosis which may help them guide some management strategies to try. Nothing showed up on mine though and I went on to be diagnosed with it.

Probably a step to go through but if nothing comes up don't accept that as the stopping point as nothing on the scan doesn't mean nothing!

Yes, it not unusual for a scan to come back negative. I have severe endo and not one of my numerous scans showed any endo. A tech explained that it is like spreading peanut butter on a towel, rolling it up and using a scan to find the peanut butter. Sadly, surgery stills seems the best way to find it. It’s a horribly painful disease that causes a multitude of problems.

they will want to do a outpatient hysterscopy which for i in 4 women is very painful and 1 in 20 can not complete it you have a legal right to a GA but with the current situation they will not want to let you have it sedation with analgesia is safer because if you only have light mild you do not need a ventilator if you have given birth naturally outpatient might be ok how ever i have seen several concerned gynecologists say they are concerned over covid 19 because of the aerosol effect and the nurses/doc giving it to patient sorry to be a downer but i do not think it is a safe time to go to hospital

Hi, not quiet. I had a transvaginal scan which yes detected the endometriosis behind my uterus but does not detect everything such as the bowel. After 11 months of thinking I only had one cyst stuck behind my uterus and being diagnosed with endo I decided I was going to discharge myself from gynae and go to endo specialist as the flare up pain was too much to deal with I had 9 hospital admissions, when I was with the endo specialist he told me I should have had a MRI scan as this will detect endo in the bowel, bladders and every where else down there. I was then told on the MRI results my bowel is damaged due to the endo increasing, my liver tubes needed to be fixed and I had 2 big endo cyst in my left ovary. So please try and opt for a MRI so everything is detected properly.

I which something more could be done to help women with this horrible disease. I suffered horribly, with multiple surgeries to rebuild my pelvis and a hysterectomy at 39yrs. I wonder where we would be if men suffered with it?! Endo ate my left ovary and Fallopian tube, scarred everything so badly that it caused infertility, bowel obstructions etc. The bleeding and pain is debilitating. Hopefully, we will have better treatment soon

Hi all. I have been following your posts as I strongly suspect endo on the bowels. Due to pure rectal bleeding, I have been referred for a colonoscopy. Would a colonoscopy detect endo?

Hi, my sister had this done it was very painful after a few days. She had it done after the MRI as the mri pickedup endo in her bowel and bladder. They needed to do this for a separate issue she was having, as she had 3 cesarean for all 3 of her kids and had issues with her organs being squashed from the time of delivery etc But MRI is better and pain free. Through colonoscopy it does not detect endometriosis however it can detect bowel cancer, or if you have had issues with bloating or passing out blood. But I personally not heard of anyone getting colonoscopy to detect endo.

Having an ultrasound is to typically rule out other things. Endo may show on an MRI but even then, not all the time. The only way to truly diagnose Endo is to have a laparoscopy x

Hi I was suffering with severe pelvis pain and lower abdomen pain all of a sudden for 4 days then went to hospital and they done a transvaginal scan where they diagnosed me with endometriosis. After 11 months of agonising pain I was given a surgery date to have a laparoscopy to remove the endo before it ruined my ovary. This was my first lap and since aug 2019 i have been endo free. x

It is standard practice to have an ultrasound ahead of a lap to rule out any other possible causes. I have endo and adeno and nothing showed up on mine. Endo is rarely ever diagnosed outside of a lap. When I had an MRI for something else, they spotted adeno but my endo didn't show up. Likewise they didn't notice my adeno during my lap. Every scan is better suited to one thing over another!

Hi I had a scan and they found adenomyosis endometriosis wasn't seen until I had a laperoscopy then they found it on the Pouch of Douglas and umbilical hope this helps, keep well and safe x

Hi you will be very lucky for endo to be seen on a scan. I know it’s frustrating when you are in pain and you don’t know what causes it so you want a diagnosis but don’t get your hopes up that it will be seen on an ultrasound. I don’t understand why they bother with scans and don’t just go straight to the laparoscopy as that’s how it’s mainly diagnosed xxx
