I was interested in this because I was offered Prostap for my severe endometriosis. I haven’t had a hysterectomy and turned it down because it made me nervous. I’d like to know more about it and how it helps. I believe, though could be wrong, that’s it’s the same drug they offer men with Prostate cancer. I copied and pasted this from the endo uk website. You could research more. I believe all the hormones they “recommend” have side effects, so wouldn’t surprise me if weight gain was one of them. Anyway for what it’s worth, this may or may not be useful for you. Last paragraph particularly.
GnRH analogues
GnRH analogues are modified versions of a naturally occurring hormone known as gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), which helps to control the menstrual cycle. When used continuously for periods of longer than 2 weeks, these drugs stop the production of oestrogen, essentially placing the body in a temporary menopausal state. This ‘starves’ the endometriosis of oestrogen, causing the deposits to become inactive and reduce. It is often recommended that a woman takes ‘add-back’ therapy or HRT to reduce or even prevent the side effects of these drugs.
The most commonly used GnRH analogues used to treat endometriosis are:
I have been on and off prostap. It did cause me to gain weight I am afraid. I do have PCOS to though so can pretty much gain weight walking past a food aisle and breathing in. I just made sure that I was as active as I could be and I counted my calories. It did stop the pain for me though which was a welcome relief.
One thing I would say though is it did mess with my moods (I had to stand in my bedroom for 10minutes to calm down because someone had ate the last sweet potato in the house.... kid you not. Totally unreasonable. I didn’t even want it either!!). A friend of mine had been on it before me and she said you need to remember it’s not you it’s the drugs that are making you like this and it stuck with me when I was having a melt down.
Hi I have just come off prostap and hrt a month ago. I have been on it for a year long story.... I gained about half a stone but it made me have more of an appetite. Everyone is different i suppose I just think if I had been a little bit stricter with eating I wouldn't have put half a stone on. Side effects with most things im afraid 😕
