Hey everyone I’m new to this but my names Sophie , I’m gonna be having my first diagnostic Laparoscopic in about 2 weeks time . I was thinking to book a holiday a week after the surgery as I’ve got a load of time off work just to lay in the sun and relax but I’m also in 2 minds . The Doctors think I definitely have endo so I’m just not too sure what to do . Has anyone travelled a week after this procedure? Thanks everyone :)

Hey, I don’t think it’s advisable to go on holiday a week after surgery. I took at least 2 weeks to be able to get back to daily activities and walk without pain or fatigue. Plus flying can have complications as you’re sat down for a long time.

I think maybe wait at least a month after or ask your consultant who will be more helpful xx

Hey thanks for your reply hun , so annoying I had my pre op assessment they couldn’t tell me much they said ask on the day which is no good to plan ahead lol . I’m just being eager as I’ve booked 3 weeks off work and I know after this time I won’t have any holiday left this year . But I definitely agree with you . I just need some sunshine right now ! I’ve heard so many different things but I just guess it goes on you as individual I guess everyone’s healing time is different etc but thankyou for you advice !! Xx

Even the quickest of recoverers would be hard-pressed to fly a week after surgery and I think it may make the likelihood of developing deep vein thrombosis worse too.

Even if you have a purely diagnostic lap it’s usually 2 weeks to start feeling better, for the swelling to go down and for bodily functions (eg pooping) to get back to normal.

I’ve had 6 laps now. My easiest lap I felt okay-ish after 2 weeks and back to doing normal activities after 3. My current lap I’m on week 9 of recovery and am still absolutely wrecked. Xxx

Hiya lovely, I had a holiday to Malta booked a week after my surgery, it had been booked for ages and the specialist said I would be fine. Whilst I technically was fine and nothing relating to the laparoscopy went wrong, the flight was very uncomfortable and my wounds were still very sore. I didn't lie around and relax, I took advantage of the holiday and honestly wish I hadn't because it made my healing time much longer. I also had to keep those awful socks on for 3 weeks after surgery else I'd have definitely got DVT! I'd reconsider based on my own recent experience, you'll enjoy a holiday much more after a proper recovery x

Hey Thankyou so much for your help yeah I’m gonna put it off I’ve booked 3 weeks off work so maybe I will see how I’m feeling 2 weeks after then maybe consider something but I have no idea how I will feel so I guess it’s best to just leave it for now . Thankyou for your advice :) xx

m 40 have had my first lap i would advise not booking the holiday, i had the same idea as you im two weeks in, first week i felt like i had been kicked by horse took at least 4 days before i could stand up straight a good week before all the gas did its thing and to get over some over the pain, even now i still look bloated last thing i would want to be doing right now is to be in the hot sun and in a bikini also need to factor in your first period after lap, for meit started 10 days in , it was horrendous far heavier and more crampy than normal. Imust add though that some people ie my mum was up and on her feet 5 days later ! and she is 60 ... so it really does come down to who you are, either way you dont want to risk infection, dvt or any other complications so stay put until you are better, a holiday is never worth risking your health.

Totally understand why you’d want to book a holiday during your recovery period - there are a few things to consider though. You can’t get the sun directly on your wounds, you won’t have healed so it may not be advisable to go in the pool or the sea, your stomach will be very sore and bloated. You may still be bleeding after a week, I was. I had my surgery on 9th April and we flew to Thailand on 27th April stopping in Doha half way. My wounds were mostly healed at this point and I was allowed to swim and have a bath. My partner got me a USB heatpad for the plane to help with my back and pelvic pain. This was an absolute push for me but worth it for two weeks of complete relaxation, I have fibromyalgia too and my health has deteriorated in the last few months so this was really beneficial for me. Any sooner and I’d have struggled even more and not sure I’d have been able to do it.

If you do decide to go away make sure you gave a good travel insurance and know where local hospitals and clinics are. Good luck with the surgery :)
