Do I go ahead with a Hysterosalpingogram?

Hi everyone,

I had a laparoscopy almost three months ago to remove an ovarian cyst. I was only diagnosed with endo whilst in the op and had no clue that I had it before.

As well as the endometrioma, I lost a Fallopian tube as it was so badly damaged by endo.

Now, my consultant is sending me for a hysterosalpingogram (where they inject dye into the tubes to see if they’re blocked) because we would like to try for another baby. The other tube looked ‘pristine’ during the operation but he said they can block up as a result of being moved during the procedure.

I’ve read up about the HSP and all I can find are horror stories about how painful it is. Now I’m freaking out! It’s tempting to say I don’t want it done after everything else I’ve just been through, especially when they said it was pristine so recently.

Has anyone experienced this procedure or have you lost a tube and then found that the second one has blocked from the op? Would you go ahead with it?

Thank you x

Hi , It is a lot of tension with HSG especially for us who have gone through the experience of endometriosis. I have experience with painful HSG, where I had to return from a center as they didn't have enough experienced doctors who could handle my situation. I have a slight curve, so reaching the cervix is very difficult. However, everyone's anatomy is slightly different. So you may not have any problem at all. But I do have a suggestion for you. Go to a center where there are good doctors if the nurse feels that your cervix is difficult to reach then insist if an experienced OB/GYN can conduct the procedure. Radiologists and nurses might not be able to handle every critical cases. Best is to get it done from a center specialized in fertility treatment. Also discuss this when you get appointment with them. It might be a bit expensive but it is worth to save the tension and pain. The test is important to know if your tube is open. My best wishes for you.

I wouls wait a few more months and then I would absolutely get it. It's as painful as light period pain. To some it's just uncomfortable.

Do not do a HSG while having vaginosis or a candida infection.

That’s interesting; thank you! Strangely enough, my friend just told me that she’d struggled for 5 years to conceive, took herbs prescribed by a TCM doctor and was pregnant within three weeks! I might just visit someone myself x
