I've been to see a consultant this morning and he's offered me a laparoscopy to remove the endo. My pain is only when I'm on my period and it's mostly manageable and I don't know whether to have the laparoscopy. He's booked me an ultrasound to see if there's any large areas of endo on my ovaries but I don't think it will show anything. I'm trying to conceive and I'm worried that having the surgery will prolong the time to conceive. I just really don't know what to do now. I want to avoid surgery if possible but I don't want the endo to get worse while I'm trying to conceive and end up with more problems later on.
If anyone has any similar stories or any advice please share.

Hi I had an ultrasound scan and it showed up nothing! For me it was a complete waste of time unfortunately. I got diagnosed from having an MRI. I don’t know if you have your laparoscopy if it takes longer to conceive, but really we are all different and it could take you longer anyway regardless of you having this operation or not. Maybe go to your GP and have a good chat about it? That may make up your mind wether you should go for surgery or not x
Hi Bthree
Ultimately it is your decision to have the surgery but a laparoscopy can help remove some of the endometriosis to hopefully reduce your pain.
After my recent laparoscopy I have been advised to use the pill for 2 months before trying to conceive however each person is different as I had a lot done during the laparoscopy and my endo is severe. I’d ask your consultant what they would advise in terms of fertility and trying to conceive which could help make your decision.
Hmm that a hard one? I would say “ no” and only reason why i say this is I have had terrible periods all my life , so bad id faint it took me 20 years to have a lap and nothing i do just have bad periods!
Simple as that.
My mum,nan and aunt all had bad period it just runs in family.
They all had lots children but still had bad periods whereas i have bad periods but i chose not to have children but im sure i could conceive if i tried.
So i had a lap and it found nothing but my blood clots To quick so im now on tansexamic acid which has halved my period pains.
Some people just have bad periods and if u say u only have pain on ur period and it bearable id say the likelihood of finding any endo is slim to none
And ur put urself through a lap for nothing?
It is a general procedure but it not pleasant... it took me a good 3-4 week to get over it and now my scar tissue keeps sticking and i got adhesions where the lap was so it has actually caused me more problems so if id known i wouldnt have.
Most people on here with endo suffer all time not just on periods and it not bearable so it a toss up of what u think best for u.
Do u know u cant conceive or are u trying? If u are dont do it just try it before u start stressing u cant get pregnant?
Having a lap wont hurt ur chances though so dont worry about that it just if u want to go through the hassle of lap that mayb for nothing
Just a quick comment to confirm that women who only have pain during their period that is quite manageable can actually have extensive endo. I’m 30 and recently saw the gp for minor change in period pain but nothing out of the ordinary. Completely manageable with paracetamol but it was a change so thought I’d be safe. 2 weeks later I saw a gynaecologist who was certain it was endo. I thought they were being overly cautious. Had a lap, stage 4, extensive. The gynaecologist has advised that my pain threshold must be extremely high which again is different in everyone & can’t be measured.
Minimal pain does not mean you do not have endometriosis.
Side note; pelvic ultrasound and Transvaginal scan didn’t show anything.
Personally I would. For me no ultrasound ever showed my endo.
I’m in a similar situation; been TTC 7 years ( took longtime to diagnose endo) after my first lap I conceived but miscarried in six years of not being able to conceive it was progressUnfortunately my endo re grew after my miscarriage and I’ve had to have 2 laps to treat it but I’m unlucky most ladies won’t be that bad and most women that conceive go on to have a viable pregnancy. I was in the minority.
Sometimes endo affects fertility & I would get it looked at to 1) know what you are dealing with 2) by having removing lesions of endo can boost fertility. Endo can affect fertility in many ways google it but that’s not say all women with endo will struggle to conceive.
Ultimately it’s your decision & only you know wgat is right for you.
Hey, my ultrasound came back clear but a laparoscopy showed a large cyst on my ovary and a lot of endo around that area. It’s the only way to get a diagnosis as well which would also give you answers xx
Thank you for your comments. Just to clarify I have already been diagnosed with endo during an unrelated surgery. It was found completely accidentally and they said at the time that it was quite mild. Then I went to this consultant who looked at the photos and offered me surgery to remove it or an ultrasound. I'm not sure why he is getting me an ultrasound because from what I can gather it's not going to see anything.
