Hi, I was told to take the Cerazette pill after my Laparoscopy without any explanation as to why! I refused to take it as I’ve previously had a bad time on it so my doctor said they would look into a different pill. They have prescribed me desogestrel and the pharmacist said it is exactly the same ingredients as Cerazette, just a different brand! Obviously I’m fuming but they have urged me to take it when I start my period but I don’t know what to do! Does anyone have any experience of either of these pills? And does anyone know why I’m having to take them in the first place? I hate being on the pill, it makes me crazy 🙈x

Cerazette pill after a lap...
Hey I struggled for years with trying to find the right pill for me! It turned out to be cerazette and then 1/2 years later (3 weeks ago) I was diagnosed with endo! My consultant said I can stay on cerazette (which is just one of the brand names for desogestrel) or try the Mirena coil. He explained that both contain the same hormone which slows (but does not stop) the growth of endometriosis, however the coil is located in the area where the drug needs to reach. So cerazette you swallow and it’s absorbed, then must travel to the targeted area etc. But the coil is already in your lady parts which is the targeted area! Both come with different side effects which I think you have to do your own research into.
My plan is to stay on cerazette for a few months and see how I get on going forward. It worked so well for me previously and I’ve read a few side effects of the coil which I would rather avoid if I can!
I wonder if cerazette would be different for you now that you have had your surgery? It’s always worth giving it a go as you don’t want the endo growing back! Unless the side effects are too severe! Xxx
Hi 👋
Thanks for your reply. I was offered the coil but didn’t fancy that either! I just know how bad Cerazette made me feel last time but it was years ago and it was before I got my Endo diagnosis. Did you start it on the first day of your period or straight away? xx
I can’t remember now! It was so long ago but from the looks of the other replies, I’m one of the few girls who are happy with cerazette/desogestrel. I just barely had any side effects compared to other girls. I darent miss it even for 1 day in case I come on my period! I take it everyday back to back and it ensures I never come on my period as they are too painful and too heavy!
Hope you find the one that’s for you, it might involve a bit of trial and error 💓
I was told that desogestrel is just the name for all progesterone only pills, or something to that effect, and not actually a type of pill, but all the pills under that name are like Cerazette and do the exact same thing. I didn't agree with Cerazette at all despite 9 months of it and it was the final straw for me - I ended up coming off everything all together! x
Hi Kate. I’ve been off all pills for five years now and I’m so reluctant to go back on it-especially not really knowing why!
Hi RoseM6. I’m the same regarding missing period! I think all I can do is try it again and if it has the same effects on me just come off it. I’m so reluctant to go back on any pill but all my really bad symptoms started when I did come off the pill to have a baby, five years ago, being on the pill masked it all for me x
And you too!
Hi Judda
So I’ve tried Cerazette twice. First time didn’t not get on with it at all. However about 4 years later an Endo nurse convinced me to try it again after having issues with the Mirena coil. Second time round (after 6 months of it settling) it’s really made a massive difference. I still get light bleeding 3/4 times a year but can manage it fine.
This month I’ve had my first proper period on it in 8 years, so something weird is going on but glad I’ve been on it the last 8 years and hope it settles again.
Hi peachpot! Thanks for your reply. I’m still in two minds over it, it’s the six months of settling I feel I haven’t got time in my life for 🙈 I wish I had an Endo nurse to advise me, I was literally sent home with a note saying take Cerazette for three months! Even when I visited my doctor, she didn’t know why! The lack of knowledge on this disease amazes me. I’m glad it has worked for you for so many years though, good to hear it 👍xx
