I was diagnosed with stage 3 endometriosis in 2011/2012, when I became worried that I hadn't fell pregnant during my 9year relationship. I also experienced strange pains and discomfort during menstruation and during other times which I put down to being 'normal.'
I was given a treatment surgery a year after diagnosis, which was beneficial for a good 9 months before it returned. I have since tried several contraceptive combinations for pain relief, but am currently on norethisterone which seems to be helping ๐ค๐ผ
Still, my mental health suffers due to on-set of pain. I regularly experience anxiety, panic attacks and on-going depression. It is because of this I decided to investigate the pain experience of endometriosis and how it affects, and is affected by our psychological wellbeing for my dissertation at University.
To do so, I devised a short survey and was hoping you ladies wouldn't mind completing it? It is completely confidential and anonymous, I require no personal information and it can be done on a smart phone for your convenience ๐
Do you also suffer with your mental health? How does the pain affect your quality of life?
This is a great thing to be researching. I'm happy to do this for you.
I'm just wondering if you're considering the relationship in the other direction... That stress and any mental health issue may have an impact on endo? It seems to be an illness so impacted by hormones and a hormone imbalance. One huge factor that can impact our hormone levels is stress, causing cortisol (a hormone) to spike which then has a knock on effect on our other hormones. Then of course, pain & illness is stressful, especially when it's not recognised by medics or treated with other stressful treatments, causing more spikes... I have been so interested in the relationship this way.
Thankyou hun, I think it is too. And yes I'm examining it both ways - how the anxiety can impact our pain experience too. I find it very interesting too, thankyou for all the biology behind it, that may come I handy ๐๐ผI will post the results once I've collected enough data ๐and thanks again! ๐xx
No problem, I'm a psychologist myself (or was, I'm having to stop work due to my health) and find it really interesting.
It's great you're interested in researching it more. It's such an understudied area and I find the medical approach so limiting. They seem to just view it as a 'bad periods and fertility issues' illness but its so much more. I haven't tried to have children and my periods are actually fine but I'm completely disabled by this. Like so many women, I was overlooked for years and have had so many issues with trying to understand what's going on.
I look forward to reading more about your results.
I work in psych research, and I actually looked at doing something like this as it has such an affect people donโt even understand or consider a lot of the time. Well worth doing x
Done it great survey, can I ask what you are studying at uni? Im doing adult nursing and thought about doing my dissertation on something endo related but decided to go completly different and do medication management as I was worried about the tutors understanding of endo. Best of luck with your dissertation! X
