Pre op today funny story 🤣

Hi everyone,

I had my pre op today.

All went well, apart from when we got to the blood test part.

I sit up on the bed and the nurse sits on a wheely computer style chair.

I’m very afraid of needles, I cry like an absolute baby as soon as they fluff up the pillow to rest my arm on.

Then the strap goes on tight and by this point I’m blubbering and shaking because I know it’s getting nearer.

The nurse starts to poke my vein like a thirsty vampire.

He reaches to sort the needle, I’m trying not to look while wiping tears away. But I see him coming back to my vulnerable arm so ... I use my foot to shove his wheely chair away!!! 😳

Can’t believe I did that! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Hope my story makes a few of you giggle

P.s. He got 3 large tubes of blood in the end

Oh that did make me smile :-)

I am just like you but I have discovered EMLA Cream and could not live without it now. You put it on at least half an hour to an hour before a blood test but if you are having a cannula put in for a drip I put it on a good couple of hours before hand. You don't rub it in you put a blob on the area where the needle is going in and then cover it with a latex patch. When I go into hospital for an op I put it everywhere they might put a needle.

I know it's not the pain of the needle that's the problem but being able to turn away and pretend nothing is happening as you cannot feel a thing really helps and it's the only way they get me through the door.

Just type in EMLA cream pre medication pack into Google, I get mine from express chemist. You have to fill in a form - Just put down that you are needle phobic, the form is designed more for over the counter medication so is a formality.

It was my doctor who originally introduced me to what I call magic cream and all hospitals have it but it's not usually offered to grown-ups.

I really hope this helps xx

Ah I forgot to mention I already had that on!

Arm was totally numb, I didn’t feel a thing! It is great stuff. I recommend it too.

Just the whole needle going in idea freaks me out.
