I had a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy on the 30th Dec. Can anyone tell me how long it takes to get over it. My tummy is swolllen and my insertion sites are sore. I keep getting lightheaded too. The gyne said I've adhesions somewhere and something is all stuck together. Problem is she discussed this with me post op as I was still coming around. Hopefully she will clear it all up at our next appointment. I'm 40 and she wants to put me on the pill but I'm concerned I'm too old for all that now also I've just lost 2 stone and the pill always used to make me pile on the pounds. Anyone got any advice?

It takes weeks to recover from the surgery even if everything has gone well - abdominal surgery is brutal and it's important to be kind to yourself. I am 7 weeks post lap at the moment and just about back to normal now.

I'm not sure what you mean by being too old for the pill - the POP is commonly used to help endo sufferers as it can stop periods and therefore help to reduce pain and is safe to use through to menopause. There are other hormone treatments that you can try such as the mirena coil or injections to put you into a temporary menopause (though these are generally only used for 6 months). Docs generally recommend that some form of hormone treatment is used unless you're actively trying to get pregnant as it's one of the best ways to control the symptoms and can help to slow progression of the disease.

Thank you for the response. It's all new to me. I had the coil previously but didn't get on with it. The gyne told me that the pill controls the hormones that make endo symptoms worse, is that right?

The endometriosis tissue is influenced by the hormones of the menstrual cycle (primarily by the oestrogen) so when you have periods, it bleeds into the pelvic cavity which causes pain. In theory the progesterone only pill reduces levels of oestrogen and can stop ovulation and also stop your periods (and therefore stop the endo tissue bleeding) but the only way to find out if it's going to work for you is to try it. The side effects can be pretty crappy but sadly with endo it's often a case of opting for the lesser of two evils.

I'm coming up to a calendar month in 3 days time so 4 weeks yesterday since my lap and ovary cyst removal.

The gas pain goes quickly. My stitches dissolved 3 days ago and sites don't hurt on the outside and internally now ok except for some movements. I am feeling more normal only in the last few days really and was signed off for 4 weeks but the fatigue is still quite bad . Not sure id have made it back if i wasnt booked off on holiday as I still mainly want to sleep. My bloating has depressingly remained I am still in 1 size bigger or low rise pants. I tried sex yesterday as i am now on holiday and wish I hadn't tried before my first cycle completed : (

Guidance I read said it can take 10 to 12 weeks to finish healing internally though you can be feeling back to normal much sooner often around the 2 to 3 week mark depending on lots of variable factors from both the surgery and your own physiology.

I was kept in overnight due to complications at the time, also had the coil out in plus I'm generally a bit of a sensitive soul so it all seems to be taking a bit longer for me.

I've got my first lap and hysteroscopy on thurs. feeling quite anxious as I'm having it with my general gynae although she specialises private in endo. I'm really hoping they do find something as the pain is terrible. They've also told me to go on the pill but I need to follow it up with my gp. Apparently the coil has good effects if your not good with the pill? x
