Ive just been referred by gynae doctor to bowel specialist for a sigmoidoscopy, is it likely for endo to be seen on one of these as already had a colonoscopy and nothing showed up and wondered what the difference is.

Sigmoidoscopy advice
hi nicola
as far as im aware the only difference is that a colonoscopy goes around the whole colon, so all the way round to the appendix but a sigmoidoscopy only goes into the left side of the colon. ive also had a colonoscopy recently so this is how i know - i ask alot of questions to doctors!
It may be that your Gynae doc wants to double check that endo hasnt penetrated your bowel if your having symptoms or left sided pain. its worth having it done if the doc has sent you for it but dont worry too much as my gastro doc told me that in his 10 years of practice he has only ever seen it penetrate once, im thinking your gynae maybe just wants to eliminate other bowel issues before they go further with treatment.
take care x
Thank you for your reply jonesey43. Ive told them that no endo was detected inside bowel on colonoscopy so cant understand why they want to still do a sigmoidoscopy, but you have put my mind at rest about it being unlikely that its penetrated the bowel although it has been seen on the outside and I do have a lot of stomach and bowel problems so better to be safe than sorry
