Abdominal hysterectomy: Im 3 weeks post op... - Endometriosis UK
Abdominal hysterectomy
It took me over 4 months for the op pins to subside - the swollen tummy certainly took several weeks - can't recall quite how long - but 3 years later I still have a bit of a tightness across where the scar is and the skin above it has a bit of a paunch. Prior to cysts and then laparotomy aside of having monthly tummy bloat leading up to periods - when that subsided by being on a period my tummy was pretty flat in its normal state till period bloat built up again.
Periods have been stopped by mirena so i don't have bloat (fluid) but do still have a bit of a paunch from the op. Nothing major though, I can still fit in the jeans I wore before the op.
Going on HRT is personal choice. If the side effects get to the point of impacting your quality of life too much then yes try HRT, see how you get on, and go back to swap to a different combination of ingredients if the 1st doesn't suit you. Bit like birth control there are different pill and patch options also creams and suppositories to work your way through to find one that suits you best.
All of them can re-activate any remaining existing endo, so be mindful of that if you do go on HRT.
If you just had Adenomyosis and no endo then it won't be a problem because all adeno will have been removed. Best of luck whatever option you decide you need to use.
I had a total adominal hyst with endo excis as bladder stuck to uterus - I also had to reopened after 2 days and they went in keyhole as well - also only complications. Now 11 weeks po but behind standard still get the tugging in scar and recovery pains. The dreaded swelly belly increases as day goes on and still does with me I did read somewhere 4-5month it should improve but that is not a guar and everyone is different fingers crossed it does.
hi. I had a total abdominal hysterectomy 4 wks ago. I was advised by my surgeon not to go on hrt for at least 6 mths. i have also been struggling with the hot flushes and lack of sleep resulting from night sweats. I have been taking 3000mg evening primrose and 1 sage tablet a day and I have seen a big difference. There is also a blood pressure tablet your gp may be happy to prescribe which is known to help some women with the flushes.
hope this helps. x
Thank you thats helpful...hot flushes have got worse ..and im still in alot of pain to be honest but im sure as the weeks go on ill feel better. Just cant stop going to the toilet bladder always feels full
Hi Angel
I'm 4 months post abdominal hysterectomy and it does take about 12wks for everything to settle down, and if it was endo cancer in your womb, my surgeon told me i can't have hrt as it can cause cancer in other places!!
good luck in your recovery and future health, and remember the good things about this op!
No more periods, a good reason to eat chocoate to ease the mood swings and the hot flushes will come in handy now the cooler weather is on it's way!!
Dunelm is seelling a pillow that pulls the heat away from your head, it is fantastic!! i haven't had a hot do since buying them. i think it wwas 2 for£12ish
take care and angel blessings to all ou4rr special ladies xxx

Hi Angel
Your welcome
If you know anyone who has had full hysterectomy for endo cancer, they can't have hrt as can cause cancer in other places!!!
Must look for natural estrogen vitamin supplements and also look up what foods have it, i was surprised!!
Take care and angel blessings xx
