Hi cabbage12,

They can take anything up to an hour. They will probably do your height, weight, blood pressure ect, then you'll go into the consultants office. They'll take a brief history & note down any symptoms & problems you have. Be prepared for loads of questions about your periods, sexual activity, contraception ect. It would also help them if you are able to inform them of any family history of gynae problems.

You'll probably be asked to lie down & they'll want to examine you (feel your tummy & perform an internal exam) they may also want some swabs, urine & blood samples. Sometimes they even perform an ultrasound on the day. After that the doctor will discuss any tests or scans you may need (you'll get a letter in the post about these) unless there is anything they are very worried about you should be free to go after. Good luck x

Hi Cabbage 12. I, too am undergoing gynea tests and biopsies. After having recent swabs and biopsies for a breast lump, I am used to the system...albeit over the past 3 months only. The time and care taken with me have been sensitive, very swift and informative. I feel my local hospital do not get the appreciation they deserve, and I would not hesitate in recommending having treatment and advice from them. The nurses, consultants and doctors in my 2 cases, are very understanding of my nervousness at any findings and are very reassuring. Good luck and hope everying goes well. Kindest regards. Jane x

Mine are usually half an hour max that's including all of the symptoms, talking about the condition you may or may not have and any checks (I haven't had an internal so im not sure if they add on much more time). Im 17 and have been diagnosed with stage 4 endo at the end of march. I take my mum to all of my appointments because I cannot handle it on my own, so it may help of you've got a hand to hold even if they wait outside the room :) wish you all the best, if you have any questions feel free to talk to me :)

OMG Timothy you are so young and so brave. My boyfriend has been with me too for all my scans and biopsies, and that reassures me that I am not alone. My daughter has also accompanied me, (albeit not whilst sitting her exams!) and she understands everything I have to have done and it is best to be open with her I feel. I knew nothing of things like this at her age, but now we have no choice, as thankfully illnesses are not taboo or swept under the carpet!. Good luck Timothy. Regards Jane x

My first one a few weeks ago was about 15-20 minutes. There were just lots of questions. I think it depends what hospital and gynae you see. I had a stomach examination where they felt it but no pelvic examination. I got asked about my medical history, my background including my family, what im doing in life at moment and other general questions. Hope this helps. I was nervous but it was fine. They already been giving me a date for my laparascopy as well so mine are quick and cut straight to the point.

My first one took an hour. I had the consult - history, meds I was on and her initial thoughts, then a pelvic exam followed by an internal. After that we then we went back to the consult to discuss the exam and how her findings impacted what course of action she wanted to recommend to me.
