it varies so much, even within one health authority.

you may be on standby to wait for a sufficiently long time slot in theatre to become available - that may be due to other patients opting out of surgery, or getting theirs sooner or becoming too ill for surgery. So availability of theatre space is one factor, availability of the gynaecologist is another factor, with an even longer waiting list if you require more than one surgeon to coordinate their schedules to work together on an op.

It can also depend on your own health. The case load of the surgeon - for example if they also do oncology (cancer) then these ops will take a much higher priority and cancer patients will have to be queue jumped as they have very strict criteria on time frames for getting their surgery.

It would normally be within the month of a pre op but that isn't set in stone, and some people can wait 3-4months. Some may hear about their op date within a week or two.

Yes they can - it just depends on so many things. If you have been promised an op within 2 weeks that usually means you are being fast tracked for surgery and that you will get your op sooner rather than later.

I waited so long for my pre-op that I was rushed into a private hospital for an emergency opp. Scared the living daylight out of my husband & put a huge dent in his pocket as we were not on medical aid at the time. Speak to your local GP and ask him/her to request a bump up the list. It is possible. My GP at the time kept increasing my pain killers and told me there was nothing else to do but wait. Well - I couldn't wait and had to therefore go elsewhere :-) Call them & then call them again if you are worried or scared.
