Did anyone else not get their results straight after their laparoscopy and have to wait 8 weeks?

I got an on call doctor to read out my notes before I was discharged, but my consultant didn't even come to see me after the op to say how the op had gone. On my discharge notes it said I had "diathermy of endometriosis", so I asked the discharge nurse if that meant I had endo and she said she couldn't say, only the doctor could. I was then told I would have to wait 12 weeks for my follow up appointment. I couldn't do this because I was moving from England to Scotland 7 weeks after the lap, so asked for a copy of all of my notes and went private instead for my follow up. Sorry that probably isn't much help, but you could always try phoning the doctors office to explain you're worrying about the results and see if you could speak to the doctor on the phone or something before the follow up appointment. Good luck.

I was thinking about calling my GP to see if she has a copy of my discharge notes as they were nowhere to been seen after the operation (or I would have been straight in them). Just a follow up appointment for 8 weeks. At the time I think I was too spaced out to care just wanted to get home. But now I want to know, just got my first period and it's been a killer but not that unusual. The consultant was doing a diagnostic lap but said he would laser anything that was easy to do. so now I'm thinking he hasn't done anything at all and do I actually have endo?

8 weeks is actually quite a quick follow up appointment time.

I was told about 4 months and that came and went and I heard nothing so I contacted the surgeon by letter - waited several more weeks to be told be return letter he was so busy he couldn't fit me in - if i had any probs to see my GP.

But certainly do call your GP surgery and ask them if they have received any notes from the hospital. it can take 3-4 weeks for your GP to be informed, but your medical record should be updated with any findings in due course. Your GP can chase them up on your behalf too.

Normally something is written on your hosp discharge letter, about what meds they have given or recommend for the days ahead, and a brief summary of what was done in the op. It may not say what was found and won't include any results from any biopsies taken, but there might be some clues as to what went on.

I didn't even get a discharge letter just a sicknote for two weeks, ibuprofen and paracetamol. My letter for appointment came two days after I left hospital. This is odd. I'm feeling a lot better and it's only been a week which makes me think no treatment was carried out. I've had some nasty bowel issues though since the op but I think a lot of people experience that.

My surgeon came and told me I had stage 4 Endo as soon as I was back on the ward after my lap. He also told me that he couldn't remove a cyst because it was stuck. I thought he told me this so soon because I had the lap for suspected ovarian cancer and he wanted to tell me it wasn't cancer that I had. However, the girl in the next bed was also told the result of her lap and what he had found and done. It sounded as if she had had her 3rd or 4th lap. Maybe it depends which hospital you are in or the individual Consultant. He told me also that he would see me in 3 months and that he would be writing to my GP with treatment suggestions. He told me what they would be too. I think that I and the other lady were lucky to be at our hospital and have the surgeon we had, to be honest...I think it is awful that you have to wait that long (or longer) for results. X

I wasnt sure it was normal practice not to tell you. I am going to ring my gp I feel quite anxious about it now

Please don't get anxious about it. It's a good idea to ask your GP to chase your results up though because you have a right to know. Maybe your GP will have received a report.

Does everyone who has a lap have two cuts where they went in?

hayls profile image

Hi

It completely depends, for a diagnostic lap 2 port sites is normal, 1 in your belly button and 1 on your left side or bikini line, sometimes it will be 3. Then for operative laps it's normally 3-5 port sites depending on what they are doing and where the surgeon is trying to reach etc x

Well clearly the surgeon did nothing then as I only have two holes.

My surgeon couldn't do anything he said because everything was so badly stuck together. x

Hi. I had 3 holes, and they did do a lot of work draining cysts, cutting out and burning endo, separating bowel from stomach? The consultant who did the op with my gynaey came round whilst I was in recovery and told me what they did as well as show me pics, they did that to the other women in the ward, not always a good thing as some of the other consultants were extremely loud and we could all hear what they were saying, bit embarrassing for some of the women. Probably best to have a follow up appointment with your GP, I was told there was no follow up for me which I found strange.

They may have. I only had two cuts and they did dyotherm around my ovaries and tubes, I guess it depends what and how much they do. Xx

I had a diagnostic lap and had 2 cuts; one in my belly button and one in my bikini line. X

Me too. now I'm thinking the worst that things are stuck together, oh dear.

Was your surgeon planning to do anything or was it a diagnostic lap? My surgeon planned to remove a cyst but couldn't because it was badly stuck. If you were having a diagnostic lap there would only be two cuts. It doesn't mean you are the same as me. x

what symptoms did you have if you don't mind me asking please?

Bokkie profile image

Pelvic pain, heavy bleeding with huge clots and a shadow on one of my ovaries which showed up on an internal scan. Also I had a highish CA125 blood test reading which can be indicative of internal inflammation. x

Hi

Call the hospital and speak to your consultant's secretary and ask her what was done. If she can't give you any info then ask that she sends you a copy of the letter that will be sent to your GP. this way you won't have to keep trying your GP for info. Just explain that the consultant didn't get a chance to speak to you and you are worried/would like to know what happened during your op.

Meant to say that my consultant told me about my cyst as I was coming round from the anaesthetic; however, I also called his secretary as I wanted to know more about the type of cyst as it hadn't been seen on a scan, and she was very helpful.

Thanks for the advice I think I will call tomorrow. When the surgeon came round before my op he said he would remove anything he felt he could at the time. But wouldn't that mean more holes than just two or can they do a bit of work with only two?

Sorry, I have no idea about the number of incisions. I had three but I didn't really know that the numbers varied depending on what was done.

Phone the secretary and see what she can tell you :-)

I had my lap 24 th feb and have to edit until 16 th June for follow up. I was told after surgery that I have endo and that part of my ovary was removed. I read my discharge notes which were quite brief but at least it gave done info. My gp is still awaiting info ftom hospital . I would suggest calling your gp or do you have the number for the consultants secretary ?

I had my lap two weeks ago and my follow up isn't until mid November. I was told right after I woke up that they found endo and lasered it. On my discharge form it said it was on both ovaries and uterovesical fold. I have three little holes. Went to gp to get my wounds checked and ask if it's normal to be experiencing pain urinating since surgery and asked what uterovesical fold was as I didn't know, she said she had no idea.. So I don't think my Gp will be any help if she doesn't know the anatomy of the pelvic region... I was sent home on day of my surgery with no aftercare explained, no comments on how long to leave on bandages or spares and no pain killers I had to call my gp next day and get them to prescribe me cocodamol as I was in a lot of pain. Hold out and wait for your follow up appointment so you find out properly what's going on, if it's distressing you maybe call the gp to see if they can tell you at least if they found endo or not and the consultant can tell you details. Good luck xx

Hi when I had my diagnostic lap I didnt get any results fro weeks. I also didnt have any bleeding after or marks from dye and therefore I also didnt think he had done anything. i have three incision sites. Therefore I was totally unprepared when I went for the follow up to be told I have severe endo. Think it is different for all
