Blood sugar levels and statins

Hi new to this site was hoping for some insight

I have familial type 2 diabetes have been coping well with glucophage had lots of stress with my mother dying last year then heart attack in February this year ever since I am struggling to control blood sugar level particularly in the morning I can go to bed with really good readings then when I wake up in the morning it’s through the roof

I am now on statins and many other heart pills but think it’s being caused by the statins has anyone else had this problem? I am considering going onto red rice extract for a couple of months and stopping the statins to see if this helps

Any advice or suggestions would be great thanks

I have not found my statins increase my blood sugars and I have been on them for a while. But we are all different

I recall someone else with that problem on here. I would consult your Dr and also research the side effects fact sheet for any medication you are taking. It can give you an insight of what you might expect. That doesn't mean everybody gets them as some can tolerate meds better than others.

Hello... There was some research that if someone was prediabetic that if that person made no changes to their lifestyle (e.g. normalising weight, eating a healthy reduced carbohydrate diet, exercise, etc.) that they would become diabetic 6 - 9 months earlier if they took statins than if they did not. I suggest reviewing things with your GP. There are alternatives to statins like Ezetimibe. I would not recommend red rice extract as it is not clinically proven, of variable strength and could potentially be contaminated with toxins.

Besides lowering cholesterol statins have other effects a) reducing inflammation (elevated BG can be a cause) often a precursor to plaque formation and b) stabilising any existing plaque.

Thanks for the input I have been diabetic for many years and have managed to control it well but since my heart attack and all the new meds I am on l can’t seem to be able to control the dawn phenomenon the rest of the day is fine it’s just stupidly high readings am I now have liver issues with the statins as well so have made the decision to stop them l was put on them when they first came out and couldn’t tolerate them then so l guess they haven’t improved that much!

I will carry on with all the other meds get some blood work done and see how l go

Thanks again for your input
