Hi all, I've been in this community for a while but never posted, so I though I'd introduce myself... I'm a 56 years old woman, form Italy but living in Ireland for the past 22 years, and the following is my T2 journey so far
Last October (201) I was diagnosed with T2 - my HbA1c was 56 , fasting glucose 9 mmo/l The GP told me that my 2 previous blood tests showed I was pre-diabetic but nobody ever told me (which makes me wonder a lot about good medical practice, and makes me angry too!) .
I know I was at risk, being a foodie, and a baker, obese and Italian (lots of carbs pout there!) but the symptoms I experienced looked like they were due to existing pernicious anemia and Hashimoto's hypothyroidism.
Anyway, I immediately started the google frenzy as I did not want to go on meds, found about Dr. Jason Fung, and went cold turkey: cut off all sugars, all grains, all starchy vegs , went back eating meat once or twice a week, increased healthy fats - basically I'm following a low-carb-high, healthy fats and moderate protein, but I do not count macros.
And I added intermittent fasting - sticking to at least 16 hours of fasting every day and the random 20-35 hours fast here and there.
I followed that very strictly for the first 6 -8 weeks, then less when travelling for a month, after which my blood test showed a FBS of 6 mmo/l and an HbA1C of 37 (no comment from the nurse when she gave me the results, again, I would have hoped in some words of encouragement, so I went to see a nurse and nutritionist who is really supportive)
I was 95 kg (14.5 st ?) in September - am 75 today... I was already walking regularly (2 dogs mean a good 45 minutes every day if not more) but I also added strength training.
Other improvements:
I no longer wake up at 2 am to go for a wee
I sleep much better
Midges seem to like me a bit less
Best if all: I feel normal again!!! No brain fog, no unexplained tiredness, I could power the whole country with my new found energy!
I may even restart the C25k program (yes, the one that is on this site, check it out !) and maybe go back to running half marathons
Hope this can inspire newly diagnosed T2!
Have a good summer x
