I always feel tired and sleepy. I am listless, not inclined to do any work.even there is swing in mood. Are all these related to diabetes or I am suffering from depression ! How to differentiate fatigue from depression and vice versa. Is there a link between diabetes, fatigue and depression ?

Suggestions most welcome .

Continuing the above, how do I know that this tiredness and lethargy is due to diabetes or depression ? Is it common in diabetes to feel fatigue and sleepiness ?

This is a very important question, particularly to me since I am a victim of both. But we can not answer the question 'what causes what?'.Because both conditions develop over a long period of time and they are normally not diagnosed early enough. If you are diagnosed as a diabetic, over time with advancing age,one is bound to get into complications even if sugar is under control. With onset of complications like ED etc and the diet restrictions coupled with increasing social responsibilities, one becomes susceptible to conditions like depression.Add to this, one has to keep popping pills and poking frequently just to keep living.I believe, diabetes and depression feed on each other and the side effects of one or more of the drugs consumed over years compounds the problems.Funny aspect of all this is, others who are not closely associated with the guy will think that there is nothing apparently wrong with him. With so many things to pull one down,is it any surprising that one feels tired and restless? The only thing that is some what redeeming is regular and suitable physical exercise. We have live by the day and take things as they come.We should not allow these conditions to overcome us psychologically.

Thank you. Wonderful write up with very practical and logical explanation.

There might be a link between diabetes, depression and fatigue, though till now not clearly understood.

There is another aspect fatigue and depression may be separate entities. There are certain features in depression that are absent in fatigue. Another thing by treating depression ,fatigue may be overcome, but vice versa is not true.

Indiacratus, fatigue is a common symptom of many disorders including depression and chronic fatigue syndrome. Depression is a psychiatric disorder while CFS has specific parameters for its diagnosis. BTW, I am not familiar with terms like mental depression.

In the context of diabetes, it has even seen that when there is sustained hyperglycaemia over a variable period, fatigue sets in. In this period all desire to move and do any thing is lost. Person become listless and remains uninterested in surroundings and often feels sleepy. This condition improves with the improvement in bs control and normality returns.

Of course there is great similarity between fatigue and depression in early stages. That is why it becomes essential to differentiate between the two,so that one may not miss depression in its early stage where its management is easy.

Please also do not forget the stigma attached to visiting a mental doctor,it's social and personal implications.

When you suffer from fatigue, one becomes so lethargic that there is no inclination towards any movement , let aside any exercise. One becomes so listless he will keep sitting in the same place for hours . It takes a great effort as well as will power to motivate self into some action.

"Neurosis is inability to tolerate ambiguity."said sigmund Freud . Also it was not that he separated psychology from philosophy . He is best known for his vast contribution to psychology, his interpretation of dreams and most importantly he is called father of psychoanalysis.

Why are you all think I should go to a psychiatric ? I have raised the issue for discussion purpose only. There is only a fine line separating fatigue and depression . Fatigue is not depression. As I said earlier many diabetics feel lethargic when blood sugar goes high. And I am sorry to say that most of us do not share our experience. "Only if we are absolutely truthfull to ourselves, it is a great excercise." Quote from Sigmund Freud.

Indiacratus, let me tell you that since last 2 and 1/2 months I was enjoying leechi and mango, all grown in my own garden. Still a lot of mango, yet to be plucked from trees. So I will continue eating mangoes for some more time. Of course ,bs will spike a bit, but I am not worried.

Hi, Mr. George, thank you for your response. Actually that post was only to initiate discussion. It has nothing to do with me personally.

About your suggestion to try lwmdr it is not available in north India. If it is available I will surely give it a try.
