It can lead to vision loss and/ or complete blindness. It is the least discussed issue ,which needs to be high lighted. What can be done to prevent it. And if retinopathy occurs how to detect or recognise it at an early stage.what are precautions to be taken.

Diabetic retinopathy can be detected through fundus. Consult an eye specialist. It can be treated if detected early. Diabetics are advised to get their fundus checked every 6 months. I had this complication but was treated by laser and am all right now.

You are right, regular eye examination including funds , is essential to detect retinopathy at an early stage.

It is good that your retinopathy was diagnosed early and you got properly treated. But did you have any problem with your vision or it was routine eye exam. when retinopathy was detected ?

keep your sugar in control and get your eye checked up yearly by a good ophthalmologist.

stay away from shirsasana if you are practicing yoga.

impaired vision, cloud newly appearing in the visual field, and pain could be the warning symptoms.

if your blood lipids are high, lower the risk by reducing the fat intake

Diabetic retinopathy results from damage to blood vessels of retina . Retina is light sensitive lining at the back of eye . Damaged blood vessels leak blood and other fluids that cause swelling of retinal tissues . It leads to vision disturbances like spots in the field of vision, blurred vision , dark spots in the centre of vision . If glaucoma develops then there may be pain in eyes. Retinopathy develops in both the eyes.

Strict and continued control of blood sugar to prevent or delay it. High fat in blood may lead to damage of retinal blood vessels.
