Just don't know what to do.

Are you meant to have something happen in your life to trigger depression?

when i try reach out to people i trust, i get told 'you're not struggling, what do you have to struggle about? nothing has happened to you, you just need to start to think positive and stop being so down'

This in turn just makes me feel worse. I hate myself for feeling the way I do. Ive been trying to get help from my gp and they don't even seem to believe I have anything wrong... and are trying to wean me off my anti depressants.

I had a major breakdown just over a year ago when i was at college. It was so easy to lock yourself away. Block everyone out. I was miles away from family and my old friends. I tried to commit suicide.

I thought i was getting better, but i feel ive became worse again. I panic. Over think. Push people away. I am getting this irritated/frustrated feeling, over everything. I get restless. so restless, i dont know what to do with myself most the time. But at the same time I dont want to do anything. I want to lay in my bed, in the dark.

I am trying to reach out to people before its too late and i crack, again.

But nobody seems to understand. Nobody believes I cant cope. But i don't really know why i am like this, why i feel like this.

I just want help.

Some people's depression is triggered by an event - a bereavement or a marriage breakdown for example. Sometimes it's your circumstances that just become really difficult to cope with. Sometimes there seems to be no rhyme or reason. Someone with a 'perfect' life just feeling like crap. I'm no health professional, but it sounds odd that just a year after a major breakdown, your doctor is trying to get you off your meds. Could you maybe see a different GP at your surgery? Get a second opinion? It always interests me how a GP can say 'there's nothing wrong' Worst case scenario, you're making it all up to get attention (I'm not suggesting for one minute you are). That itself is something wrong. Do you always manage to articulate your feelings clearly to the GP? Would it be helpful to take a fiend along to your next appointment. Someone who knows you well enough to help you out with the doctors questions? Or maybe make some notes to take with you .,,

Maybe you could write down how you feel or print out this page and give it to your GP to read.

Also try finding a MIND or similar in your area and ask them for some help and support. They could possibly help explain to people on your behalf.

If things get really critical (thoughts of suicide etc) please go to GP or A & E straight away.

We do understand how you feel, please take care and continue to ask for support which you need at the moment x

Hi, It sounds like the people you are turning to are unable to understand depression and unable to respond sensitively towards you, perhaps that's partly why you are depressed, it certainly won't help you overcome the depression! I also had a breakdown in the past and know how difficult it is to get over the feelings, it's as if they suck you back into them. Your GP is not being helpful, I would seriously consider changing GPs to someone who is senstive to issues of mental health and to ask to be referred to the nearest specialist psychotherapy service where they provide therapies that can help to contain your feelings, perhaps CBT or MBT. Oh Jodo that sounds unfortunately like a very common situation. You don't have to have an event which causes depression. Often it happens for no obvious reason. My young second cousin was severely depressed for years. His family told him to 'pull himself together'. When he told me I told him he wasn't a pair of curtains. A lot of people don't understand depression or other mental health issues and I think it frightens them.

My family don't understand or many of my friends. Fortunately I can talk to a few of them who do. Other than that I just come in here and rant and rave a bit.

I think Sue's and the other comments are very helpful.

Come in anytime Jodo - it usually helps to talk and get it off your chest. We are here for you always.

hi jodo. i am sorry for your predicament, a lot of people who dont understand tell you to pull yourself together, sort yourself out, you dont have anything to be depressed about. to this i say, never judge a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes. i took bad 7yrs ago, i had a good job, travelled all over europe, you could say i was lucky, but i was in heathrow airport, and took a step back, and that was it, told my workmates, i couldn't do it anymore. and walked off the job, there is no switch you can switch on or off, my wife drove to heathrow and picked me up, i couldn't explain it to anybody, i got the same old reaction, "You Can't Be Depressed, Pull Yourself Together". went to doctors, had the crisis team burst in on me, then I talked to a nurse clinician, who new the way to

talk, no questions, just a chat, football, holidays and days out. i am better now but just dont talk to

people, i know i am still bad, but it is my bad, just take 5mins out for you, everything else doesn't matter, you can beat this JODO i know you can. come on here when you are low and have a good rant, there is always somebody on here, and a good rant will do you the world of good, believe me mate, we are all here to help out. regards & best wishes. ghandi.
