Hi all,

Many of us when dreaming during REM sleep have our dreams with movements and talking. I usually remember these very well and have been thinking about what is specific to them. For me, they are always playing out in black and white, and the light is not sufficient so it’s sometimes difficult to see what’s happening. They are of bad quality! Other dreams are usually in bright colours and full light. The manuscript for the ”kick-and-scream” dreams is usually an animal of undefined sort which is approaching me and I feel a need to defend myself, but mostly I am not scared. Would be interesting to hear about the type of dreams you have and if there is any specific kind of feeling in them? Picture shows two animals who never attack me neither in my dreams nor daytime.

Mine are in color. I'm usually playing soccer and wake up kicking.

I have had alligators and wild dogs attack me. Have also had bad people corner me and close in on me. Sometimes I would be the hero attacking to save somebody or myself.

In the last couple of years most of my nighttime actions don't involve violence. It is usually my reaching out to get a basketball rebound or stop a football from going out of bounds. I don't get the dreams very often anymore and have stopped worrying about them for the most part (but I still sleep in my own bed and won't let my cat sleep with me. I tried to honk him like a car horn once).

Did you get scratched?

No he did not scratch me. He just meowed, which was odd for a car horn :)

My dreams are always in color, scenic vistas of land and sky. Often steep craggy mountains. Occasionally, I let out a gasp or jerk a foot but not much more. My mini American Sheherd “rescues” me. She stand over me and touched my mouth/nose with her muzzle, then comforts me with licks and a cuddle. She has responded this way with our very elderly dog as well.

Oh, so your dog wakes you up when you move in sleep? That’s great! My cats stopped sleeping in my bed for a few months but now when I am much better and stopped moving so much they have come back again.

How were you able to get better?

My dog sleeps with me and is elderly so when I get one of my dreams which are mostly calling out, I wake myself up to see him staring at me with concern on his face.

It’s only happened 3 times in my 3 years since diagnosis. My first one was where I was a crow and clearly made a crowing sound while flying over a huge chasm. The other ones I was human and screamed no but don’t remember what happened. And the last one was the best. I saw big balls rolling across a road and downhill and there were faces on them. All significant ones. And I loudly announced “heads are going to ROLL!!!!” One of them was my mom and another was Trump but can’t remember the third. Wild stuff.

This last one was about a month ago.

You can search previous posts from me about how I improved. Diet with less sugar, alcohol and carbohydrates , more high intensity training but lately also a Tanganil cure made a huge difference for me and stopped the dreams for almost 10 weeks in a row. Tomorrow I start a new cure, have been off medication because I underwent a PET scan earlier this week.

I have dreams where I am taking to old friends and my wife told me that I am actually talking and sometimes she can hear what I am saying. But I also have sometimes scary dreams which makes me shout. They are normal dreams but suddenly something happens which makes me act. E.g. The other days I was at my farms and talking to someone. Suddenly a fireball fell in my laps and that made me jump up and shout.

MY husband had REM sleep disorder from the time he was 20 years old (I found out on my honeymoon). Once when he was frantically kicking me in his sleep, I woke him up to ask him what he was dreaming and he said he had been running. He lived to be 80 with Parkinson's.

Yes, one of my brothers also got RBD already in his 20s and still has it but hasn’t developed PD although he is 70 now. These symptoms can for sure develop very differently.

Absolutely great question. Thanks so much for asking. The link between RBD and Parkinson’s is fascinating and, as far as I know, still completely unexplained. My partner is 79 and diagnosed with Parkinson’s at 69. We met when he was 43. He has had RBD since I first met him (and probably before that). He broke a toe once after kicking the wall near our bed. We have always slept in the same bed but there have been some very close calls. I would roll into a ball and cover my head with my arms. I would ask him what he was dreaming. His dreams were almost always the same. He was in a forest at night, and was defending himself from an attack by bad people. It was always night in this forest and (perhaps consequently) the dreams were in black and white. My partner has also had no sense of smell pretty much his whole life and (perhaps as a result) a somewhat limited palate when it comes to food - eating only meat and potatoes and not liking what he calls the “consistency” of fruits and vegetables. His Parkinson’s symptoms only first started to appear age 70 and he started taking prolopa. The sense of smell has not returned but the RBD does not happen as often these days. He will be 80 this year.

I asked our GP why my husband had matching sores on his ankles, he didn’t wear shoes or walk anymore so whats happened there…they had no idea. I dealt with the symptoms (sores) and padded him up etc. It was funny when I realised what was happening when some mornings his padding etc would be all over the place he told me he had a dream playing football and scoring a goal. This happened every time he dreamed of playing football so ‘Dream On’I said.
