Hi my name is Amanda and I am fifty two years old. I had my colonoscopy this past Friday and I have my diagnosis of ulcerative colitis officially yesterday. I began a gluten free diet this past Saturday. I have been sick since intestinal Covid last November but finally found a great doctor team. While I have been experiencing colitis since that time, I had my first full on flair yesterday and it terrified me. I just thought I had problems. I won't be eating apples again let's just say. Applesauce only for this gal from now on. I guess one can say I am overwhelmed on all of colitis. Does anyone know about any good books, gluten free recipe books or sites that might help besides here? Was anyone scared like I am with this and how did you calm yourself? And what helps during a flair...Any tips? Thank you in advance and it is nice to already see so many kind folks...Thank you--Amanda from Murray Ky....

Hi Amandabrat78, I had just used search on here to see if anyone had posted anything about a thing called, "Intestine with Stomach", sounds gross I know but supposed to be very good for bowel inflammation which I have big problems with, I don't have a proper diagnosis as yet but my GP suspects UC, I use YouTube a lot and on there is a doctor Berg, one particular video ( 9 things to help an inflamed colon) talks about cutting out gluten, dairy, certain vegetables and recommends certain supplements such as the intestines with stomach as well as a bit of fasting, I am going to try some of these things over the next few weeks, I do know that gluten free baking is not so easy, I also know that I personally will not be cutting out the gluten, I did use gluten free products a while back but the shop bought stuff has so many additives and caused me other issues, I do hope you can keep your UC calm...

I have had Crohn's for over 40 years and a Gluten free diet is a new one on me. Everyone is different and you just have to work out through a process of elimination what food your system cannot deal with. You have already found one apples, but is it fruit high in fibre? You will not know until you try. I am lucky just salted peanuts, odd one in a biscuit no problem, but a packet to myself no. A Gluten free diet may help you, but you will only know if you try it. If it does not help then it is just another thing you have ruled out.

Deep breathing exercises, I find helps with pain and calms me down.

Amandabrat - hi. I have had UC since 2019 and after a very rocky few years am now experiencing remission with a new drug. However, I have learned a lot about diet during this time. Can I recommend that you have a look at the UMass IBD AID? Google it, and if you are interested look for the facebook group which makes it more accessible. While diet doesn't appear to cause or stop the disease it can certainly have a big impact on symptoms. As a starter if you want to manage your symptoms, cut out all processed food and go back to basics. Cut out skins, pips, seeds, stalks, anything you wouldn't eat with mouth ulcers (spicy, hot, sharp, hard, scratchy). Bland bland bland - bananas, stewed peeled apple, rice, steamed fish, steamed veg (not certain veg - look at rhe lists in the diet above. Definitely GF and forget the commercial GF foods. Good luck.

Hi there-I am so sorry for your diagnosis and struggles. It certainly can knock the wind right out of you and certainly cause fear. I have three autoimmune disorders including colitis but also a paralyzed stomach. Yes applesauce, smoothies, soft soft veggies, stewed chicken, lots of eggs. It truly matters what you eat because we all experience something different. I am kicking myself as I ate a baked potato yesterday and ravenously continued with the skin.... don't suspect today will be good for my bowels! Gluten is OK for me in small quantities....

Will be thinking of you!
