I was diagnosed with Colitis in may 2016, i was put on Octasa (Mesalazine) 1200mg taken twice a day. Since then i haven't had any further attacks. Has anyone been able to reduce their medication or even been able to come off it completely. Maybe it's the medication that keeps symptoms at bay. Thank you for reading Jud

Advice on medication please
I've been on Asacol ( mesalazine) for 21 years and been in remission all that time, I now only take 1x 400mg tablet a day. I did come off it for a month because I have raised liver enzymes which my Gastro thought might be caused by the meds, liver results didn't improve so I went back on the meds, I'm not going to risk stopping long term.
Hi IBD can occur in varying degrees and there are often times of remission and flare ups. most people take regular medication when in remission and these can be increased during a flare up or other medications added. If you look at the patient information leaflet that comes with your meds it will probably say about what doses are used for when in remission or a flare.
I have been on different Mesalamine forms for several years now. Currently on Lialda, 1.2 grams per tablet and I take 3 tabs per day. I've never had a dosage lowered only raised. I think the body adjusts to the medication and it becomes less effective. I may be wrong but that has been my experience. Good luck to you and I hope that you feel better soon.
Thank you for that.
