hi everyone, I have Crohn’s disease (last 4 years) and sadly still not reached a stage of remission, however my query is despite the fact I only manage one meal a day I have put on a lot of weight, mainly around my stomach area! It’s so ‘big’ looking. I’ve read up using numerous sources and many say it’s now a recognised fact that crohns patients get this. Well I’ve never been told or advised this will happen when I eat very little and have chronic diarrhoea afterwards anyway. Am I alone in this and could this be just another kick in the teeth for me?? Help plz
stomach fat: hi everyone, I have Crohn... - Crohn's and Colit...
stomach fat
Hello, Romany. I too, have put on a lot of weight in my stomach area. I eat realtively healthily, mostly fresh, home-cooked food, and very litle junk food, which aggravates the condtion anyway. I was first diagnosed with Crohn’s in 2016, and althnough, mine is mild compared to some poor folk, it doesn’t get any better either.
I worry about having excess weight in the stomach area as most everywhere you read, says that it’s the worst area to have excess fat. The rest of me isn’t fat at all!
I just wanted to reply and let you know that you’re not alone, but I don’t have any magic answers to it either!
Oh well, you're not alone. I have Crohn's since my childhood - and after many many years of just steroids, I gained at least 40kg. Now I struggle to get rid of it. Btw - I am as well not in remission since a long time.
One doctor even told me, you can't have Crohn's, you're fat, another doctor told me 'you're to fat, we can't help you with fertility' .. and so on so on so on. (but my IBD Team here in Salford Royal ist just amazing and kind und understanding und they know how we feel)
I eat kind of healthy, not really too much. Fresh, home cooked most of the time, I have food diary - or kind of Crohn's diary, as I track my loo-runnings too. (I would say, my bullet journal helps me a lot with all the crap we're facing)
So, no, you're not alone with excess fat, many of us Crohnies have it. Despite the fact, we all have more or less chronic diarrhoea. I don't have a solution for you, sorry to say that.
Crohn's sucks - in many ways. But we can try to get better - step by step. I think the first step should always be get in remission. After that the head is little bit more free and one can concentrate on the weight or any other issues we face. (for me, it is the mental health I really suffer at the moment)
Thanks Vera for your insight too, I feel less alone knowing it’s definitely a real issue. I know in the great scheme of crohns it’s a little thing, but when we feel bad enough it’s just one more thing to be self conscious of because everyone believes we should be skin and bone, and yeah at times we have been albeit the belly bit xx
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
I just started this med and my life changed in about a week....in a good way. It's a very cheap drug to make so pharma in the States doesn't sell it. Walgreens just showed me a custom pharmacy. The number of conditions that are being treated with LDN are incredible.
hi Romany, I don’t have Crohn’s but do have ulcerative colitis and my stepdaughter has Crohn’s. She is 34 and after having kids has the weight around the stomach area. She lost a lot of weight when she diagnosed in 6th grade. Once she was on the right medication she was able to gain weight to a normal healthy weight. In her 20’s she got worse with the Crohn’s and eventually had to have surgery to remove part of here intestines that had the clusters that was like🍇 causing a blockage. I had stubborn belly fat that is slowly going down with my change in diet. I’m 61. Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis both cause inflammation and bloating which causes weight gain around the stomach area.
hi Sarah, Thankyou for the helpful reply, it does seem to be a connection with this dreaded stomach fat😣how sad both of you suffer from ibd’s… I hope yr both doing ok atm though xxx
