colonoscopy sedation
When I had a colonoscopy, there was one type of sedation on offer, by cannula and I’m glad I accepted it. Worked immediately, helped everything run smoothly and a fast recovery.
It depends where you take it. In the UK NHS they only offer shallow sedation and a painkiller and most people would not feel the pain. However I have had a loopy colon so it didn’t work with that type of sedation on my first colonoscopy, I had to retake it under deep sedation because apparently during 1st colonoscopy I would move with pain and they could not continue. (But I do not remember the pain or anything). So it all depends on your colon and the preparation. Make sure your preparation is good and leave the rest with the doctors. But if they ask about sedation, do take it!
I recently had a colonoscopy and as I wanted to drive home I said I would have it without sedation. They put in a canula just in case - and I am glad they did.
It did get very painful, I think mainly as they have to 'blow you up a bit' to get the camera through.
The sedation worked almost immediately, so do have it!
Couldn't drive for 24 hrs though but woirth it.

I would have the maximum they are offering, usually via cannula.
Over the last 40 odd years I have had numerous colonoscopies. Here in the UK whenever I have had sedation it has normally been a mild sedative through a canula that relaxes you and make the procedure much more comfortable and easy. I usually fall asleep for a short while AFTER the procedure. But you do need someone with you to escort you home. On a couple of occasions I have elected to go without sedation asI wanted to drive home or I was on my own and wanted to catch the bus. Depending on the degree of your illness without sedation is OK but I found it quite uncomfortable and I would strongly suggest sedation is the most comfortable option even if you will feel quite tired for the rest of the day.
Hi, I live in the UK and never bothered having sedation until I had to have a camera through my stoma. I was given pethadine through a cannula in the back of my hand. It worked very well for me 👌
