I used to really suffer from stitches at this point in the programme. They annoyed me even more as, as a trombonist, I know my lung capacity is better than most.
In the end what helped me most was remembering some old advice from when I was a kid learnign the trombone - don't worry about breathing IN - your body will take care of that by itself. But concentrate on breathing OUT as far as comfortably possible on every breath. This will make sure that you get a nice full lungful of fresh air on every breath, instead of just topping up all the stale stuff in there. It'll also keep you from losing control of your breathing, which is the danger if you always breathe through your mouth.
(I also ignore Laura's advice to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth - for me doing what I've mentioned above keeps me in control.)
