races that dont require sponsorship

Does anyone know of any races other than race for life and parkruns that dont require sponsorship. In these days of austerity one doesnt want to keep asking people to sponsor you plus it would be nice to have a go at a 10k or bigger without feeling obliged/under pressure to raise money for charity.

I use the Scottish Running Guide to find information on races throughout Scotland. They list races for each month for the whole year, with links to the individual race websites. There are two equivalent guides to the rest of the UK.

southernrunningguide.com/

northernrunningguide.com/

The Scottish guide list about 50 events every month (mainly Scotland, but a few in northern England and one or two major international marathons). Looking at the list for April, I'd say the majority (~90%?) do not require you to raise sponsorship money. Some of these are organised by charities, eg the one I'm registered to do which is run my Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, who raise funds from the registration fees, but NOT state you must get sponsorship. Registration fees for these can vary quite a bit.

Other races listed are organised by local running clubs or organised as part of a community event such as a gala day; these are usually fairly cheap to enter.

The Bupa 10,000 doesn't require sponsorship, but places for that have all gone now I think. Try taking a look at runnersworld.co.uk/events for local races happening near you.

I'm doing the Bupa 10k (with sponsorship) that Bradman mentions. There are only charity places left but some of the smaller charities have low donation amounts so might not be too much more than the standard entry fee. I know what you mean about wanting to do organised runs but not have to keep harassing people for sponsorship - it's a little frustrating.

Good luck in whichever ones you do! :-)

Oh, and should anyone want to sponsor me, I'm running for the MS Society - just send me a message and I'll send you the just giving link ;-)

(Hey, you don't ask you don't get and every little helps lol)

Try the Bupa Manchester 10k if you are in that area.
