I will watch this with interest as we have started thinking about this too. I don't want to give up the jogging, but I'm not sure about running inside without the fresh air and scenery to distract me! Not sure if there are many choices though for when the ice arrives.
I keep outside, it can be lovely running in the snow. I knock it on the head if it is really icy; that is no fun at all and I have tried! But I live in the temporate south so it normally only stays that icy for a week or so at a time.
Snow running is awesome though.
I have to say that personally I can't abide treadmill running so there is not much of a choice there for me
I stood on a treadmill yesterday for the first time ever and it was absolutely fine!
I'd been dreading having to move inside but a combination of a wonky knee and the approaching Swiss winter made joining a gym unavoidable. Mine does a 3 months membership which I've taken out - individual visits would work out a lot more expensive if you go 3 times a week. It's still not cheap compared to my lovely woods...
but I think it'll be fine for the winter and the treadmill itself was completely unproblematic, except the girl left me trying it out and then I realized I didn't know how to stop the wretched thing...
We have considered this as new runners and facing our first Winter. After weighing the pro's and con's of outdoors and treadmill, we have decided to "brave it" and go the outdoor route. We may live to regret this decision! Gayle
Have just done my first run in the dark - I found a housing estate with street lights and it went really well; it was great nosing through people's windows, and I actually did a personal best! Don't know what happens when it's icy, though . . . Good luck!
I run after work outside about 6-ish, well lit streets and feel safe as loads of people coming back from work! but slower as too aware of tree roots/dodgy flag stones etc. Long run on Sunday and maybe a short morning run before work! last year ran over the winter, only stopped when icy ! then went swimming! just get the right clothing and enjoy!!
I'm a treadmill fan: I hate running outside. Don't like being cold and not having water to hand and getting my trainers all muddy. I'm such a girl I also live in the country and I do NOT fancy running on country lanes the way drivers speed down them!
I have heard from various places that running on a treadmill may be slightly easier due to no wind resistance and the best way to simulate this is to put the treadmill on a 1% incline.
I'm hoping to keep running outside as much as possible; the treadmill's not nearly as scary as I'd expected, but it's DULL! The 'gym' I use is a small collection of machines in an old outhouse, so there's no TV to provide distraction. Although its harder work running outside, I much prefer it really... Here's hoping for a relatively ice-free winter
