Treadmill and outdoors run

Hi all...

U started on a treadmill in the gym as struggling with Achilles pain in both heels and also to support my daughter who wanted join the gym. I have had gait analysis and new trainers and things are better. Did w4r1 yesterday and bottom of legs and heels ached, I am seeing physio for my heels moro and also considering inserts. It is hard in the gym on treadmill... boring and excessively hot as no air con in the gym.... but I enjoy being with my daughter. I will probably go on my own at times as she will be working through the summer hols and I was thinking of doing some outdoor running. What do you all think..... is this a good idea to mix treadmill and outdoor part way through the program or am I best sticking to the treadmill for the program and moving outdoors after?

Thanks πŸ‘£πŸ‘Ÿ Sarah

No reason not to mix the two. This has to work for you and your lifestyle or it won't be a fixed thing and that would be a shame.

Just be aware that outdoors and treadmill are very different and you won't get upset if it doesn't go well straight away - This is NOT to put you off just a heads up. Outdoors you have to sort pace out for yourself the road stays beneath your feet unless you propel yourself along and that road/track may be uneven so you need to look where you're going. You might find yourself being a bit slower outside too at the start and it's nothing to worry about. I love running outdoors and am sure you will too.

There is one proviso though check with your physio - they might want you to stay on the softer cushioning of the treadmill for now.

Hello Sarah, hope you feel soon. Well done for getting this far and your daughter is really lucky to have you as company in the gym. I am going to be on W7R1 tomorrow and so far in this program, i have run only in treadmill and is planning to do outdoor run from now on as suggested by many fellow members as that would help in getting some fresh air as well as enjoying the scenery and not make us so bored staring at the wall all the time :-) Hope you will enjoy your outdoor run and I am hoping that i do too.

Hi there... yes I Think it has to be more interesting outside to run... it is hot and tedious in the gym.

I am frightened of a knock back in the program if it doesn't go well outside... please let me know how you go on.... fingers crossed all is good for you 🀞

Hello Sarah, i have the same worry but I will definitely give it a go and see as sometimes gym can be very boring and I have to keep motivating myself. Take care.

Hi bonny_lass I'm sure you will love it out of doors, it really is great. Just make sure you go out when it is cooler, be prepared for it being very different (as I said toSarah) and a whole new world will be opened. It's great to have lots of different ways to run, even a wall has its uses at times!

Forgot to say (strange as a hobby horse of mine) SarahOReilly and bonny_lass the main thing about any running is to make sure you are hydrated all the time, not just when running, it makes a big difference to how your body performs.

Good luck to you both πŸ€πŸ€
