No not running but swimming. The pool when I arrived was quite busy and its only a small pool 17mtrs long so you have to be careful when ploughing up and down. Anyway I did 40 lengths at any easy pace, then it was just me in there.

So off I started with my HIIT = 1 length as fast as I can go(13 secs) then 3 easy (2 breast stroke 1 front crawl) Today I managed to repeat these 4 lengths 10 times, phew that was 10 x 13 sec lengths. So another 40 lengths clocked. I was rather tired after that but still had just over 10 minutes until aqua gym so I just kept on swimming, total distance was 108 lengths = 1 mile. Came out of the water 45 minutes later after aqua gym looking like an old wrinkled prune ;)

Off to do Zumba in 1/2 hour, it will be taken a little bit easier this afternoon, maybe!

I'm exhausted just reading about your epic swim and then everything else on top of it! Where do you get the energy from? Do you follow a particular diet or have you always been this active?

Was always active in my younger years oona then work got in the way cos as I got older I was too darn tired at the end of the day to do anything. If your almost brain dead your body doesn't function well! Its really only since I retired that I've had the time and inclination again. I have 3 older brothers and with my competitive nature I always tried to keep up with them. Swimming was my thing but being asthmatic I never really managed to get further than County level. Our dad taught us to swim when we were little more than babies which was something unknown in those days, the swimming pools were darn cold places. Dad had been a PE Instructor in the Air Force and taught us all how to play tennis, football, cricket oh you name it we did it and I was never left out just because I was a girl. Wonderful memories :) As for special diet, no, today if its edible I'll eat it, I'm starving hungry after all that Zumba and swimming.

'I never really managed to get further than County level.' Haha you make me laugh Oldgirl. some of us never really managed to get further than the other end of the pool! You deserve a good plate of food after all that!

You just have to try this HIIT lark, it really does build stamina and you'll be amazed how quickly your heart rate drops back down. You don't need to do any of these fast spurts for long, even running or cycling. They have been proven to help top athletes in their training. Footballers use it now too I'm told.

you sound as mad as me (except I never did anything to 'county' level, or anywhere close), I'm feast or famine with exercise. When I'm working I don't seem to get home in time to do anything outside of school uniform/house stuff and when I'm not working I do a stack of classes, Zumba, LBT, Yoga, cycle and now my latest, running.

Swimming has always eluded me though, I do 10 lengths after squash (oh, I forgot that one!) and have a steam, but I'm a rubbish swimmer, can only do breast stroke, and even that is probably not done terribly well. Perhaps I should get swimming lessons. I did a few lengths yesterday (only 4, just to stretch out) and noticed that I am much stronger, stronger legs from all the running/cycling and stronger shoulders/upper body from the yoga

And there was me all excited because I managed two lengths (50m) Technically you're not allowed at the deep end of our pool unless you can swim 50m.

Years ago as a very young teenager I used to do well in orienteering but nowadays it has become more running than navigation at that level so I doubt it would be the same now. I do sometimes imagine myself as a svelte Scandinavian champion though when I am running (have a good imagination!)

Our 2 sons used to love orienteering when they were in the Scouts, many years ago now. Our grandchildren aren't quite old enough yet but their daddy takes them off up into the hills with map and compass very often. In fact I'm off to join them 14th Oct up in Glen Affric for some hill walking and hopefully a run or 2.
