I think if you had a certain level of fitness before, it's ok to do something else on a "rest" day.
Some people cycle, some zumba, some swim...I.have a rowing machine and some weights i use twice a week, so 3 runs, and 2 home workouts. I do allow myself 2 days off from both (although i have a black labrador who needs walking twice a day for an hour each time!!!)
I was quite fearful to do anything else when i started c25k in case i mucked up the program but your body will tell you if you're doing too much
I run every other day. I usually 'rest' on two days (which usually means gardening and walking the dog). On Sundays I play tennis. In the summer I also swim on rest days. At the moment I'm working full time so I have to admit that the gardening has had to go for the time being. (It's too wet anyway!)
I'm pretty active so I have a number of exercises that I do, walking, swim, aqua gym, pilates & zumba & WiiFit Plus. I tend to try and mix it up but most of these are classes and in the mornings so if the weather is good hubby and I would walk about 5-7K in the afternoons. No dog to keep us company unfortunately.
I walk the dog for longer (min an hour) and some days I do Body Pump and swim. I am trying to get to a Pilates class once a week too but life keeps getting in the way!
I run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday or Saturday. I don't do any other exercise as such, but I go to a lot of toddler/baby groups during the week and my husband has the car, so I walk to all of these with my kids in the double buggy. I probably walk about 8 miles a week at a fast pace pushing approx 3.5 stone of children, so you could argue that that is exercise, though I just see it as going about my daily life! I often walk 2.5 miles on the same day as a run.
