🍏A change of plan

🥶After a very chilly run on Sunday as the temperature started to drop dramatically we awoke to ice and light snow on Monday. Yesterday and today there has been heavier snow and a low of -17. The high today is expected to be -7 but it’s still -17 at the moment. The paths are treacherous with lots of thick ice & so for a while I am choosing not to run. I have run on soft snow many times.. it’s wonderful but not this type of ice. 🧊

SO for a while it will be carefully orchestrated walks and concentrating on Pilates, strength & flex and maybe some of the other exciting things on offer over on our S&F forum.

healthunlocked.com/strength...

Hopefully when some more moderate weather appears I will be ready to run again. Watch this space….

Snow is good, ice isn't. Take care and have fun 😁

oh wow it looks like a winter wonderland… but not good for running 😏

As a matter of interest when it’s that cold what do you wear to run? Is it layers and layers?

Hettie on Sunday I wore my basic long sleeve base layer and long running tights with lightweight jacket. Added gloves, wool socks and two running hats plus a buff. I did extra warm ups inside so that I was ready to run. Amazing how warm you get running!

Yes exactly, that’s why I was interested - not that I’ve run in such low temps but in the UK in winter, even if I’ve started with two layers I always go down to one fairly quickly as I get too hot ( as my name would suggest!) 🤣

Just below freezing (in the UK) I'll usually wear three layers on top: close-fitting base layer, a fleecy mid-layer and a jacket over the top. A buff on the neck and a knitted cap on the head. Gloves. Running trousers. Two layers of socks: inner thin, outer thicker.

Running in crisp, still winter air can be an amazing experience.

I love running in crisp cold air! But I still get hot! 🥵🤣

Hence the jacket which I can open if needed.

Yeah I agree zips are a must!

My goodness me Annieapple, those temperatures we would have in January or February in the UK if it was severe winter, not near the end of October, I think winter officially starts in that part of Canada on 1st November compared to the UK on 1st December, anyway all you are missing from home in the UK at the moment is rain rain and more rain. +11C temperature. Glad to hear that you enjoyed that chilly run on Sunday, enjoy your runs inside on the treadmill as well as those other exercises such as Piolets, strength and flex. 😊 ✔️💪

🍏 Thanks AlMorr .. no access to a treadmill & far from any Gym but the rest yes 🙌 Hopefully once more snow covers it will be softer to run. Will keep doing walking recces to assess. You’ll soon have to build arks in the UK by the sound of things! 😂

Wow, it looks beautiful. Not for running, though! I think the coldest I’ve run in was minus 2. I don’t think there was snow, but it was icy so I ran on the grassy riverbank. I wasn’t cold but my mouth froze!

The coldest temperature that I have ran is - 6C/21F at a parkrun in late November 2019, I am not sure how I got one of my fastest times of 30:56 considering the conditions, at the same parkrun 2 months earlier I got a time of 30:55 running in a temperature of +19C/66F.

I would rather run in -6 than 19! But you would think that fear of slipping in freezing conditions might slow you down, so it’s a surprising result that you did do well! In cold conditions I’m always careful to warm up properly - 10 minutes walking and then running slowly for another couple of kms before everything has warmed up!

It had been a dry Autumn so although the temperature was - 6C there were no icy patches, just frost and hoar frost on the trees, it was a Christmas Card scene running through the woods, I was wearing joggers, a thin jumper with a thicker jumper over that and my parkrun T Shirt over that, in contrast the 19C run I wore only my parkrun T Shirt and shorts.

I definitely would have preferred the cold run!

I recently ran my latest 10K and first 10K event race in a temperature of 18/19C, I was well prepared for that run taking plenty of liquid with me and not drinking anything else, I wore my London Vitality Virtual 10,000 T Shirt 👚 and shorts, a lot of runner's complained of the heat and sunshine but as I was well hydrated I enjoyed that run ran in a sub 70 minutes time of 1:09:22.

🍏 The Land of Maple 🍁 is very pretty at the moment & we are warm and cosy indoors. The snow is very icy at present so we need to wait for fresh snowfalls to enjoy running and making snow angels and the fun stuff.

You know, I’ve never made snow angels 🙈 maybe next time we get enough snow here I might make some!

B is taking me ice skating on Sunday morning and I can’t wait! I’m absolutely rubbish at it and know I’ll fall but I’m really looking forward to giving it a go 🤗

-17?? Isn't that possible?! That's almost like the temperature at the North Pole.. after all, it's only October (almost November).

And I complain about 8 ˚C. 😱
