Good morning running people...Welcome!

Here I am in the Welsh Corner; currently, 21 degrees here at 8.a.m. There has been a wonderful haze over the sea, for the last day or so, but the view from the corner is a lovely one.

Fresh coffee and a new smoothie this morning... a morning wake up one ! I have Welsh cakes and some Bara Brith...croissants too.

So... slip off the shoes, grab a cushion and let us just catch our breath!

I am feeling much happier because I have begun C25K... again!!!! I have repeated bit after illness or injury... I have repeated the whole thing... once after a long time out, and I am looking forward to it too! Week One, Run One was completed yesterday morning , before it go too warm!

C25K is like an old friend; familiar and non threatening. You know what is coming and you know you can do it! We have a fair few friends here, repeating or doing bits of and they will share how it feels for them!

Now, I hear you ask,,, what has this got to do with anything... well it is all to do with a small, but hugely, important part of the C25K plan and one which is often the source of many a conversation in posts and replies... yes, it is … supplementary and supportive core strength and stamina work. Done alongside the running!

There have been quite a few posts over the last week about this... questions asked and replies given... a few of which, actually asked... is any of it necessary?

Well, for many folk, especially, but not exclusively, new runners the answer is yes.

For me, certainly that is my response, and over the last weeks since Mr OF's heart attack and no running done at all, my S and F work has kept me going... physically and mentally. There are many of our seasoned runners too, who will agree.

When we begin this programme, we are pointed towards the, How to Run C25K post and there is so much information there! It is probably better in some ways after an initial peek to use it as a reference post... and dip in and out as needed. There are links and support on almost every aspect of our running !

So at risk of repeating myself yet again,

“One of the bits that you may miss, if you are a newcomer to the forum, ( or have forgotten about, if you have been here a while), is the bit about some strength and stamina work”.

Simplistically, supporting the running with some strength and mobility training is an important part of being able to run well .

When we run, we may just, think it is all about the legs. But, the rest of our running body has to keep up with them, it needs looking after.. Every bit of it! From top to toe and not forgetting our brain either! This is important always, but as we move on through the plan and beyond, the importance does evolve also. Looking after our body limits, fingers crossed, the likelihood of injury

Whilst I have been away from running over the last weeks, I have tried very hard to maintain my daily routine, gently! I have, because of my mental anxiety included lots of mindful exercises and loads of breathing techniques. Adriene and her Yoga become part of every day and walking!

Simple, gentle exercise that kept me , not high impact or prolonged or needing equipment of any kind. But... that exercise was and is right for me, and it is only over the last week or so that I have upped the exercise a tad... to support the runs that are now coming.

There is a HUGE choice of exercise available, and it sometimes be overwhelming. Where to begin then?

Do head, please, across to the Strength and Flex Forum.

healthunlocked.com/strength...

There is something there for everyone...there is something there for every single part of your running body, from top to toe!

I am sure that all of us can find exercises to fit into a regular routine...Yoga, Pilates, dancing, walking , stretching, flexing, swimming, hiking, etc. etc. Exercise to be done inside, outside, in a chair, after injury.... you name it and it is there.

Do not dismiss normal everyday activities either...! Short on time? A day's housework, gardening, decorating, looking after the children; lifting, climbing stairs or in my case, care days with a six year old whirlwind! Every little bit of exercise counts. I wrote a post on this very subject a while ago!

healthunlocked.com/strength......

So come on...maybe it is time, to head out towards the S and F Forum !

The exercises you find, can be put together in a manageable routine. They can become a very good habit. Those simple exercises can help you to run, to achieve your goals and to enjoy every step of the way!

So, now you have your cushion, time to talk. Let us know what you are doing now, what you are going to do...because if you are not doing something already... it is time to think about it :)

🍏Thanks for the cushion Oldfloss .. hope you on your golden one 😊 I couldn’t agree with you more about S&F and how it helps one to enjoy running by strengthening everything . If one is having a set back and can’t run.. gentle exercise keeps the body ready for when you can run again.. they help with the frustration too, because you are doing something positive. As you say they soon become a habit if you tie them in to your daily routine. Definitely a win win!

Hello and welcome to your cushion here!

Yes.... just keeping us going and ensuring the body stays healthy and strong...You are right.... when we cannot run it feels like we are doing something! That can help the mind set wonderfully!

These good habits are truly, worth nurturing, like listening to our body too! Our best guide..!

Thanks for popping in today... i do wish some of our new runners would too! xxx

Hi to you in beautiful Wales Floss 🙋‍♀️

I'm perched on my cushion now having done the low impact cardio workout Bodyfit by Amy and a YWA confidence boost balancing practice first thing.

Keeping moving this way is helping me enourmously, thank you for the nudge.

A little window may be opening up for me to squeeze a run in again soon, so keeping strong and flexible is so important.

Have a lovely day, maybe a paddle or a dip if its not too hot. 🌞😎🌻🌻🌻

xxx

Hello... and it really is right now, just gorgeous!

Good to see you here, and I do know that even when you are not running you are working that body!

Keeping moving is the way, isn't it... even a little can go a long way... and set us up for the rigors of the day too!

I do hope that little window does open for a little run to squeeze in... I know how good it felt for me. that first one back! x

We visited some of our friendless churches today, and found two on the Llyn, not friendless but, very, very old, It was so lovely and cool inside... we stayed taking our time for quite a while and found a shady spot for a picnic later... x

Swmae, Floss, bore da everybody. (A sprinkling of Welsh for the Welsh corner).

I'm very happy this morning, having just done run 3 of week 4 and the ankle feeling more solid than it's done in a while. And the reason is because I've been doing my strengthening exercises regularly. I always intend to, but my disorganised brain doesn't always cooperate especially if I'm tired or under the weather. Well for whatever reason, my mental focus has sharpened up recently and I've been able to practise consistently.

I don't usually post in the S and F forum, but I'm often having a little nosey, and checking out the exercises. Right, better go and do those stretches again! Thanks for the coffee xx

da iawn diolch !

This is good news...proof positive, that the exercises do work... and can work well... It isn't always easy to fit things in and sometimes, all too easy to let it slide...

Very well done you on that run.. it is very warm and here now by the sea it is 24 degrees... and hot! It is good to go and take a look at S and F...often things that that just fit our needs and interesting too.

Thanks for popping in... a cushion here for you, any time :)

Ah well, I'm in the Ardèche on a hurriedly booked holiday, and it's toasty warm when it's not raining! But it's a bit too hilly for running this week. What a great excuse!

I wish I had that excuse now! Lucky you... it sounds blissful... enjoy x

Hi Floss. Can I quietly sneak in to the corner cushion and grab a berry smoothie please?

Life bit tough at the moment, but I am continuing to run 3x a week and am planning to return to Parkrun next Saturday after a long absence.

In the meantime I’m trying to improve my time for 5k and failing miserably. Managed 45 minutes this morning and that almost killed me. My best previous Parkrun time was about 35 minutes, but I guess I am 3 years older now and I have been quite ill so I really shouldn’t be as disappointed as I am. I’m pretty sure when I last did the tail walker role we came in at about 55 minutes so I’m barely better than that!

But I’ll give it a go, and take whatever result I get.

Fresh smoothies are just made.. and a lovely cushion just for you!

Oh gosh... things do have a habit of getting tough sometimes don't they! I am glad you are still finding the time to run ... and yes, you should not be disappointed, you are older and you have been ill and the time... it really does not matter. The run is the thing and enjoying it! I did 2.2 K on my week 2 run 1 yesterday and I am over the moon!!! :)

Just run...relax and just run and let it evolve... think of all the positives that you are achieving... and let the negatives stream away... you are doing just fine!

Meanwhile, sit back, relax and just breathe...thank you for popping in ! xxx

Hi there, OF. Sorry to be late on a cushion, - been busy having fun with visiting family. 😄

It’s great to hear that you are on your way with C25K again - I so agree that it’s like an old friend. Enjoy!! 🤗

I’m at the other end having just completed W9 & now into consolidation. I have repeated this journey slower than ever before, - all good. 😄 Plenty of cycling & some Pilates to go with it - so a big yes to the cross training from me.
