Putting the Fun back into Fitness. Part 2... Trying to find the TIME... and it is there...

Okay People....Hello!

Here I am again .hopefully with some ideas to keep us all moving. Moving easily, comfortably and, of course, enjoyably!

Thank you for all the replies to the first Fitness Fun post. Loads of comments and loads of ideas to share and take on board and, a common theme emerging too!

Many of the replies made mention of something that was stopping folk from putting in, even a small amount of the strength and stamina work which could help support their running. That, something?

Time... or rather , the lack of it.

The general feeling was that we all want to try to put in some supplementary exercise on some of our rest days, but life, family, work and a whole host of other reasons, seem to conspire, literally, to stop us in our tracks!

So... trying to keep my theme of putting the fun back into fitness, I have put together a variety of simple? exercises that we may all be able to do...I am hoping to add a focus soon to for those of us who are restricted by location, type of dwelling ,

( e.g. if you live on a boat, you won't have stairs? ). or by mobility issues:)

Here goes!

Making the most of our time for exercise... without having to look for it :)

We all, hopefully, live somewhere. We all have to keep where live, clean, tidy and comfortable. So...why not see, what things that we do to achieve this, could be useful in our exercise routines...?

Exercising, with two great end results! A lean, keen body and a spotless living area:)

Okay... let's hit the ground running!

* Run up and down the stairs. Okay you can only do this at home if you have stairs. Unless you pop this exercise in if you work and there are stairs there!

This does not mean hurtling up or down, it means going up briskly, taking things up and bringing things down ( carefully), taking the stairs two at a time.

(I reckon I do this exercise a lot, because I am always forgetting things that I should have taken up or brought down)!

* Get out the vacuum cleaner ! Yep, you heard me. Using your cleaner can, believe it or not be a really useful way to strengthen the core ( there it is again), Try to keep those muscles tight whilst you have a good old blitz around the place.

* Get washing those dishes. Forget the dishwasher. Clean dishes and Calf raises. Start with your legs hip-width apart, before lifting up on to your toes. Hold this position for three to 10 seconds, before slowly coming down to stand on your whole feet again. Repeat this exercise 10 times per set, for three sets, with one minute rest in between set

Whist we are still in the kitchen...

* While you are waiting for the kettle to boil or watching something on the stove or in the microwave, pop in a few squats or ankle turn. A few press-ups against the wall maybe.

If you think how many times you are in the kitchen, then all these simple exercises done, whilst doing something else, will build up, and maybe even become a regular habit.

Now....

* Time for bed...making! Well, we have to do it .don't we? Just changing a bed on your own can feel like a workout...and a double bed... even more so! So maybe a few extra exercises in the process could be fun? Sit on the edge of the bed... hands palm down by your hips...then wriggle off the bed edge so you are only supported by your arms and feet. Lower down slowly... keep the elbows in... and use your arms to push up again...repeat 5 to 10 times, if you feel you are able! A little rest in between each raise maybe, and then... get that bed made...!

* Into the bathroom.... well, we know all about the toothbrush squats from last week's post. So... what now... well. Giving the shower and the sink and the bath a really good clean... that is one heck of a stamina workout... and one heck of a clean bathroom.

* I need the loo...no.... for an exercise... I'll clean it first... or after..? Loo seat down... one foot on the loo. Other foot far enough in front of you to do a little lunge... Lower your body gently and use the extended leg to push back up. Try to keep your upper body as straight as you can ! This is a great leg and GLUTE work out... Repeat with other leg! Repeat on both legs.

Had enough yet.... I need to stress these are ideas which you may be able to use... SOME, but not all.... you really do not have to do all of these... Pick and choose:) Here are a few more...

* Clean the windows... in, and out if you feel the urge...Use both left and right hands and arms to ensure an equal work out, and clean in a circular motion. Reach as high as you can to work your abs and oblique muscles (your waist).

* Bringing in the goods and taking out the trash,,, Get a good grip on the bags, palm facing up and make a fist, keep your elbows at your sides, and lift the bags so your hands reach your chest. ( Bicep curls on a mission ) !

OK. Time for some fresh air...

* Gardening time. Weeding and planting... use a kneeler or padded cushion. Maybe squat as well as kneel and squat when you are picking up and loading the bags!

There we go.... exercises in the home...great for the body and great for the home...

I repeat... these are just some ideas... which could be incorporated into your day... a few here, a few there... supporting your running by strengthening the bits of you that need to be strong.

On some of your rest days... maybe get one or two together and have a housework/ exercise blitz day... otherwise... just odd ones during the week, doing those things you are doing anyway, like making drinks and cooking meals.

I was going to add a final one..

* Cleaning the Car! That means spraying with water, washing, cleaning, rinsing, drying, and polishing, all amazing for your arms and abs. Bending down and squatting, wheel rims, and trims... Stretching and leaning...everything getting a great workout!

So... all done and dusted... ( I forgot dusting ), and now you can take yourself off for a day out.. Or someone on your family, may be so impressed by all your efforts... they may decide to treat YOU!

By the end of the day I will have done the kitchen and gardening ones, plus making lunch for four! All this with a small whirlwind here and moving a load of pots and plants too !

Now... I cannot lie... This evening I shall be relaxing , with a chilled glass of something and do some ankle exercises whilst sitting on my chair...

Phew!

Hello! And good morning! I’ve got a bedding wash on right now and will be hanging it out to dry so will get the bed change done!

I do arm dips using couch and I do deep squats while gardening, I call them toddler squats!

I’ve already cleaned the bathroom including shower and loo but your suggestion for glute workout while cleaning loo has my attention! I will do that next time for sure 👌

I think I might clean outside of windows later after a spot of gardening.

I don’t have dishwasher, coz I don’t like them, so I always do dishes by hand. I AM the dishwasher 😂

Blimey... you have had one heck of a workout today! Plus you are doing so, so many exercises anyway...I think you must be having a decent strength workout most days.

I will be interested to see how the loo one goes too!

Maybe, if the weather is really going to hot up...you need to take a bit of a break... and simply sit and do some ankle work!

Phew... well done you... and thank you for showing folk that yes, we CAN find time if we think outside the box! x

I did a bit of gardening and repotting 2 of my wee Acer trees and then was exhausted so just relaxed for rest of day!

I actually did some ankle exercises and foam rolled my feet for a good while!

Had a wee power nap and now it’s time for dinner. I’ll be taking it easy tomorrow and just going to do some yoga and light chores.

I have two HUGE acers... I love them.. they were already in our garden when we bought this house.. two ig. one tree and two small ! You did well, was it very warm where you are?

I love ankle and foot exercise, some that can be done in the comfort of your chair! Exercise without effort.

Enjoy your dinner and yes, do ease back tomorrow... you deserve it.

I’m near Glasgow and it’s been very warm, for me at least! There’s been a nice breeze though so that’s been good. I was back in by noon and pottered about for a bit before reclining on couch.

Yes, it’s to be a very warm weekend and I’ll be staying inside mostly during hottest parts of day. I don’t handle the heat very well!

I’ll be drinking lots and lots of water! x

My day went very well Oldfloss, in the morning I took a walk and a little running around Dunfermline parkrun course, I won't be running there tomorrow or for that matter anywhere as I am the tailwalker for the second time at Palacerigg parkrun, this afternoon I did a bit of sunbathing in my garden, not too hot with a fresh east wind and a temperature of 20C, but it's to get warmer and more humid over the next few days.

🍏Oh Floss this did my heart 💜 good!! I realise now that I am exercising without even thinking about it & the adding in the little extras you suggest will make it more worthwhile! Bring on the housework so that I can run better! Yes, yes, yes!

Just what I was hoping for... and I bet you ticked a whole load off and you feel good!!! I am so glad that I put this up... because maybe with a little bit of thought, folk can pop an exercise into the chore time!

Exercising without thinking about it ! That sounds just great ... a habit, you don't even know you have got :)

If you run in the park or similar, you can use benches and railings for all sorts of stuff, most of which you've mentioned but it's also good to include them in a run. Sometimes I take a resistance band with me and do a bit at the end of my run.

My run is done for the day and exercises still to come. I have to separate the band from running because it's prescribed to fix my rotator cuff - it's working a treat, but your post reminds me that the band is right there, in the corner, waiting for me ... in fact, it's coming for me now!!😱

Thank you... I never even thought of this.. ! Benches, railings... tree trunks maybe? Including them in a run or after just great and a resistance band would tuck away nicely?

Yes, press ups, Belgian split squats (whatever they are!) pull ups..... running away from cows - if you live in Cambridge!

yeah, the resistance bands are so much more practical than dumbbells when going on a break somewhere. 🤣🤣

I always said if I did more cleaning I wouldn't need a workout (not a specific one anyway) . Fabulous list of things we all do Floss, it's always good to be reminded how good they are for us.I washed the car yesterday evening, it was dark by the time I finished so I'm not expecting it to be perfect.

Squats and calf raises daily are good and habit now. press ups on the sink (don't do those often enough).

I'll think of this post now and put a bit more enthusiasm in 😀

The windows do need cleaning....

You and me both... when I was writing this I realised that I could do more in a useful way and keep the house a tad mire spick and span too!

You got a great workout in with the car cleaning... upas and downs and stretches and bending! I am glad that the squats and calf raises are a daily habit... that is surely where they become just another part of our running. I know I do them automatically... and they do help to keep everything going.. ! Which is useful as I think I may have broken a toe!! Poops!

Windows tomorrow then? Not if it is going to be as hot as they say, maybe legs up and a few ankle turns and foot stretches.. and arm work? Lifting a delicious galss of ice cold juice... perfect !

Oh no! Broken toes are very painful !After a rubbish night's sleep, lunch with a friend and a 5k walk this afternoon the windows didn't get done today xxx

What struck me when reading this post was “gardening workouts”.

Over the weeks of nice weather around this time of year, I used to focus on the garden. Then I started running, and I think I just didn’t have any surplus energy. So I have to admit I neglected the garden for 2 years or so.

But this year, I’ve got so much more energy and gardening seems so much easier again.

So over 3 weeks worth of days here and there (squeezing it in between full time work) I cleared and weeded and unbrambled and cut down overgrown bushes and thus cleared a lovely level, section behind a shed, which is actually quite sunny in the afternoon. And it has now some vegetable containers, and a garden table and chairs. And I love it.

But that was sweaty workout gardening work, with a lot of squatting, and lifting and digging.

I had a solear calf muscle niggle to show for it (now all gone again) but also a lovely sunny afternoon sitting area that I’m really proud of!

I go there now every evening.

So my thing certainly was gardening workouts! But I have to admit that it was rather the running that gave me the strength to enjoy gardening again, rather than gardening giving me something for my running! But you never know!

Thanks you! You have been gardening so much,,, your new sitting area sounds wonderful...you make me feel envious and rather lazy!

Thinking of all those different movements and stretches and bends and squats... I am exhausted thinking about it... and when we add in all the lifting of posts and carrying heavy weights !

Gardening has to be one of the most incredible workouts doesn't it!

Really enjoyed the first one, some really simple, fun ideas we can all incorporate into our daily routines. I’m going to get my grandchildren’s space hopper out and bounce around the house and garden, but I’ll have to pump it up first as it has shrunk a bit through lack of use! Then it’s off to the swings when the storm stops!

Thank you for giving me a whole new perspective on exercise and helping me rediscover my inner child. I’ll look forward to future posts 😊x

It can be huge fun...I regularly swing on my small granddaughter's swing.. Dad constructed it...it's sturdy!Housework can be fun...and productive too!

I'm exhausted just reading this :D

I'm sure I mentioned before that I do calf exercises while walking the dogs!

The lawnmower & strimmer is a workout for sure as my garden is definitely not flat.

My windows could definitely do with a clean though

Yes... so much there... and much of it with the potential to nudge us into action...MY windows are still waiting for an inside clean!

Gosh your garden will probably be giving yo u one heck of a workout,, arms , legs and core strength too!

Dog walking I feel is a really great one... and the calf exercise... just super... well done you!!!

Great ideas 😀 and it feels good to know that cleaning and tidying helps keeping the body healthy, apart from the house clean! I spend most of my time working so I have developed my own tricks to keep my body healthy. In the office I always go for one of the standing desks, as it keeps me much more active (physically and mentally) than sitting down all day. If working from home, same! standing as much as I can and if I need to attend meetings I sometimes put the camera off and walk around or do some quick exercises (will definetly keep your extensive list for reference 😉). I also walk up and down the platform when waiting for my train (rather than sitting down in the waiting room). All in all, it is not only what we do but how we do it and I agree there is plenty of opportunity to be healthier in everyday activity 👍🏼 THANK YOU for all your hints and tips 💜
