Stay on the IC extended😬

This time, it's peroneal tendonitis (no, me neither 🤔😏).

Hi gang, those who know my history will know that I've spent a lot of time unable to run with one thing and another - breaking my ankle in the first lockdown being the most dramatic event. Well things started looking up this year and I got to week 7 again, when I went and kicked the leg of the bed (ouch!)

That took ages to heal, and I did a tentative week 1 run to see how I was - it seemed ok but I ended up with pain on the outer ankle joint over the following week which didn't go away. So I booked an appointment with a physio, and the good news is, he thinks it's fixable. The bad news is, he doesn't want me to run on it for another 6 weeks. I've got lots of stretches to keep me occupied and loosen up tight calf muscles. Luckily, I can manage my Zumba gold and Pilates classes now, which will stop me going up the wall. They say that patience is a virtue...

Not another set back Grumps! At least you have a diagnosis and recovery plan which is 9/10 of the battle in my book. I had a similar problem on the inside of my ankle…foot swelling, pain …it caused major overpronation…..But…my magic physio fixed it. You will see this through 👊🙂

Thanks BC, and you're right of course, doing the right thing is better than trying to battle on with an injury. Still, grrrrrr!!!

sorry to hear that, sometimes it is one thing after another isn't it, i have had some set backs, this week i have a painful ankle bone on the outside of my right leg and its a bit swollen, but i didn't get it through running i must have banged it on something at home without realising and it decided it wanted to let me know and swelled a little, it doesn't stop me running (managed a 4 KM run this morning) which doesn't make it any worse fortunately, but it is there letting me know it is there!!!

Heck be careful, that's what happened to me. My ankle wasn't hurt in my latest furniture-kicking episode, but that's where the pain is. My calf muscles have tightened up because I wasn't walking properly while my foot was healing - and that's put extra strain on the tendons that connect to the ankle joint. Fingers crossed that yours will sort itself out 🤞

That's so not fair, heal well and hopefully you will soon be out there running again

Argh sending buckets of sympathy your way. I’ve also got an injury that’s being a little stubborn in settling so I totally understand your frustration. Glad you’ve got a physio involved-they’re such good professionals to have in your corner.

It’s great there are some activities you can carry on with while not running. I’m running a little bit but most of what I’m doing is also Pilates and zumba, with loads of strength training and walking plus a bit of swimming too. I’m trying to keep telling myself that when I’m back to running normally, I’ll be so much stronger from all this cross training and it’ll make me a better and more resilient runner. Really hope this is just a brief interlude in what I’m sure will be a lot of years of running ahead for you. ❤️

There’s loads of support here. Keep on posting how it’s going for you and we’ll keep sending good wishes.

Thanks MissU, I have to admit I'm not being very good at being patient this time around. I really needed that physio to tell me not to run. I was sorely tempted! I do much better when somebody else gives me a list to follow.

Patience is so hard to find! If you do find some, send some my way!!

I had the same experience with my physio. He was really clear-nothing for two weeks at all and then precise guidance about how much pain was acceptable for how long and when to stop if I was grumbling on any runs. It’s so good to have that in my head when my natural instinct is to push on.

Really hope your recovery goes well and your other activities are able to compensate in some way for not being able to run ❤️

I can empathise. I developed peroneal tendinitis 4 weeks before my first half marathon in 2020. However, my wonderful marathon running physio managed to get me on the start line with massage, acupuncture, ultrasound and KT tape, so, while that was perhaps a bit extreme, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Get better soon!

Wow Sandie, that's sort of scary and inspiring at the same time! If I was 4 weeks from a half marathon I would be going for it too. As it is, I'll stick with the stretches for now (probably)😅

Probably sensible, unlike me 😂 I haven’t had a recurrence though and I have done a lot of running since then, so you will be back 😊

The great thing about this forum is that there are lots of members with stories of injuries and recoveries and repetition of the plan. You know it works, and you will get to the end of it again, and run regularly, and it will be worth it.. Happy healing 😊

You have my sympathy grumpyoldgirl. I suffered peroneal tendonitis the first time I attempted C25K, at about W4 I think. It settled well with a similar period of rest and I went on to complete the programme, before promptly getting another type of ankle tendonitis when I was consolidating which has proved much harder to recover from and has pretty much had me on the IC ever since! 🙄

Looks like there are a lot of us about. At least I'm in good company! Hope you manage to get sorted before too long.

Sympathy on the peroneal tendonitis, I had it too, rest and exercise and time sadly is the answer.

Slightly off topic, but I saw a really funny video of a midwife telling a story of being asked to demonstrate where the peroneal tendon was situated......

😂 yes, I don't recommend telling people you have peroneal tendonitis - from experience, it doesn't seem to matter how much you stress the 'o', people always seem to hear an 'i' and you get some funny looks 🤣
