Need advice : Well just nearly finished a month... - Couch to 5K
Need advice
Have you had any advice from your physio/medical professional about how soon you can run after that injection and how to build back up?
Going straight to a 5k park run after a month off with injury sounds like a fast route back to the couch. I’d be taking it very gently with run/walking to start with, lots of recovery and seeing how it goes. An early week of couch to 5k sounds like the most sensible plan-I’d personally be doing week 1. You’re definitely best asking the person who told you not to run for a month though-they’re in the best position to advise you.
It's not an injury as such, it's due my arthritis in my knee flaring up, I have been riding a bike and doing exercise that they have given me. The injection was a last min thing as nothing else was working
It’s great you’ve had the injection. Did they give you any advice on starting running again after it?
You’ve had a problem in your knee serious enough for a person with expertise to tell you not to run for a month. I really hope you’re going to follow that advice. Starting slowly is the safest way.
I did follow their advice and the month is up next Monday. And I know as have had the left knee replaced
It’s great you’ve been able to follow what they’ve recommended. Hopefully the knee exercises and cycling will put you in a good position when you restart.
What I was asking (which maybe I might have worded badly) was whether they gave you any guidance on restarting after this month’s break?
No not yet but will ask, thank u
That sounds like the best plan. I can see you’re itching to get going again (I was exactly the same when I had time off after a fall) but you want to be able to do it safely so you don’t end up with more time off. Someone who knows your history and can look at your knee is best placed to come up with a way to return that’s best for you.
Really good luck.🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️
Hi Andy6659, I’m having my first ever op on Sat and it’s for left knee replacement I’m terrified i would love to hear your experience. Did you have a general for surgery? how is the pain? How long was the op ? How long before it took you to be up on your feet etc etc any info will be great. Thank you.
The first thing I would be doing is asking the person who advised no running for a month .They surely know your situation better than anyone on here .
All I can say is that if it were me, I would t just go out and do a park run ! At whatever pace !
After the go ahead from your health professional I would suggest (as has already been suggested by MissUnderstanding ) starting with some quite short run/walk intervals .
And again, if ok with your healthcare professional maybe some knee strengthening exercises.
Already doing the knee exercises an like I said before it's due to arthritis which will.never go away unless they replaced it like left one
Hi Andy6659 , I can only echo the advice you've had from MissUnderstanding and Instructor57 .
First, please get advice from the health professionals who've been treating you,
Second, I think you graduated about a month ago, so even had you not had the month off, you'd probably be finishing, or not long have finished, consolidation. As you've been riding your bike, hopefully you won't have lost much aerobic fitness. However it really isn't advisable to go straight out for a 5k run as soon as your month off is up.
I know from personal experience how frustrating it is to have to build back gradually. However, you don't need to rush these next few weeks, as you potentially have many years of running ahead of you.
I hope things go well for you.
The advice here looks solid mate even though it’s probably not what you want to hear. I got injured right after graduating and I came back too hard and combined with a couple of non-running related health problems ended up taking 2 months off. I’m back at the start now (one more week 2 run) but I’m so glad I did it this way. Aerobic fitness is still good but I can tell from the (good) aches that my muscles need a chance to catch up. Good luck pal.
