Greatest Hits Radio listeners voted RUNNING up that hill by Kate Bush No. 3 as the song that makes them happy, No. 1 was ELO's Mr Blue Sky, that is another song which is very good to run to.
The song that makes you happy 😊 🏃🏾 - Couch to 5K
The song that makes you happy 😊 🏃🏾
The old ones are the best I think! Oldies but goodies 😀
Indeed 59er, as the Slade song goes "does your granny always tell you that all the old songs are best", of course there are a lot of talented new song writers now but I wonder if the songs of today will be remembered in 50 years the way that music of the 50's to 80's are remembered now in 2023.
I'm with you on that!
A few years ago in menorca there was a yacht called mr blue sky. Worth millions. I like lots of songs not really any as favourites but on my phone on ringtone I have que sera sera Doris day. Everybody laughs when fone rings. Love that song. Mostly on podcasts now with walking.
Love both of those! When people ask me why I run I often echo the sentiment from 'running up that hill'. There must be so many people who would love to be able to run yet can't for one reason or another, having to listen to perfectly able-bodied adults refusing to exercise. I am grateful for every run I go on
I don't mind running up hills, as long as they are not too steep 😂
I prefer coming down (as long as they're not too steep😂)
Me too 😂 😂
'The Trooper' by Iron Maiden, its the perfect bpm for running 😁
My Spotify playlists are full of 60/70’s rock music. You just can’t beat it.
One of my favourite songs of all time…”She Said” by Barclay James Harvest…is 8 minutes long, I found it perfect to keep me going when I started the longer runs on C25k 🏃🏻♀️🐌🎶
Greatest Hits Radio is my favourite station 🎶💃It's always on in my kitchen.. while I cook and clean... Workout... Chill... My Kitchen disco 💃🎶
Great radio station sparky66, Clyde 2 in Glasgow is ending at the beginning of April this year and will be replaced by Greatest Hits Radio from 3rd of April.
we have “kitchen disco” at my house when the little uns come round. They like the proper rock n roll. Led Zep in particular 😁. Bad Boy by Nazareth is another one they go mad to 🎶🎵. Proper fun.
Mr Blue Sky is the conclusion of the Concerto for a Rainy Day, side three of the double album Out of the Blue. It has an interesting conception story.
It's a great mood lifter.
I got Guardians of the Galaxy for nowt from Apple I only downloaded one track but ended up paying for the whole album. I got the refund but later noticed the entire thing was still on my phone. So, I’ve got Mr Blue Sky. I quite liked it before I was a runner but now I absolutely love it 🥰 Great running tune and it always an uplift when it hits my ears 🏃♀️
One day like this by Elbow is just fabulous so is Mr blue sky 😊
Shostakovich Symphony No. 10 2nd movement would keep anybody running. youtube.com/watch?v=C2T97Gs...
Some classical music is also great for running, Shostakovich is one of Russian's greatest composers, more modern than classical.
Shostakovich composed this symphony in 1954. He had terrible difficulties under Stalin, as did other Soviet musicians. In particular he lost his job at the Moscow Conservatoire after his 9th Symphony which Stalin had ordered to celebrate the end of the WWII but as it was sardonically humorous it was not at all what Stalin wanted.
Thanks Comte for that information, I have that symphony on Spotify and will listen to the whole work (not running) this evening.
On Wednesday evening with my headphones on not to desturb my neighbours I listened to the whole of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10, excellent work.
I have a terrible habit of whistling to classical music 🎶🎵😁☺️
Both great tunes 🎶 I always smile when ‘I will survive’ by Gloria Gaynor comes up on my playlist 😂 especially at the end of a longer run. It always made me smile too when ‘Back for Good’ by Take That came on right at the end of my C25K playlist just as I got back to the car 🚙. Perfect timing but quite by chance. I love to run immersed in my favourite tunes. I find it soothes all the senses at once. Don’t like running up hills though. I’ll leave that one to Kate 😂
I’ve got that by Glor 😍. Great stuff. Never can say Goodbye too 🏃♀️
I especially like The Source with Candi Staton with “You Got the Love”. It’s a belter Very much like Gloria I think
Love Candy Staton too ❤️Young hearts run free 🎶😁
they sure do Candi! 😀👍
I was running the other day, and struggling a tad as I’ve lost fitness recently due to lay-offs, when Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” began to play. I had to laugh 😀. I don’t know where I’d be without Bob on my runs 🙂🏃♀️🎵🎶.
Greatest Hits Radio is my channel of choice. When Simon Mayo left Radio 2 we went with him to GHR. Now the wonderful Ken Bruce is joining the ‘ Dream Team’ 😀😀
Simon Mayo was also on Scala Radio when it began a few years ago, however, I don't think that he was a suitable music presenter for a classical music station, he feels more comfortable on the likeing of Radio 2 and Greatest Hits Radio, that was quite a surprise that Ken Bruce is leaving Radio 2 for GHR.
I remember when Wogan was discussing the loss of favourite R2 presenters, and that the Beeb’s attitude was, “if it ain’t broke, break it!”
Which is where we are today. Is Johnny Walker holding out? 😀
Good choice Frizzbomb67, Gloria Gaynor had some fabulous hits in the 70's, including 'I will survive', probably her greatest song, I don't tend to run with music, I never take my Smartphone to parkrun, however, I do a lot of my walking with music accompaning me.
It's a funny thing about 'best running songs' - they're always personal of course and tend to fall into one of two categories - either a favourite or one that exactly matches ones preferred cadence. I have only got two (so far) that match both criteria, since I don't have the skills to process my music through one of those BPM setting programmes. When either tune comes round on rotation it is always a little treat!
A bit more recent but Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys - great song at slow pace when flagging or to get you going steady at the start - fires up my heart (and then the old legs) every time.
I love both songs but mr blue sky is on my running playlist and I can confirm I love running to it. (I also love Kate Bush, but not for running )
Mr Blue Sky is the BEST! Anyone else do the huff. huff. huff. bit after the line "running down the Avenue"?
OK. Only me... I'll get my coat.. 😂😂
And for another suggestion... "Do anything you wanna do" - Eddie and the Hotrods
"Happy" by Pharell Williams. 100% sure to lift your mood as you start out.
By the title that must be the happiest song ever😍😍✅✅
My absolute favourite is Life’s a happy song by the Muppets! It always makes me smile 😊
My current favourite running song is this one from Metronomy
Metronomy - The Look
Good running song 🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️
Lovely Day by Bill Withers always does it for me
I like that song as well BlackCountryLee, also a great song to run to especially if it is a lovely day. 😊 🏃🏾, how he holds his breath at the end of the song is amazing.
I agree. I will never forget it randomly came on my playlist about 5 minutes from the end of W9 R3 when I graduated first time round at about 6am on a fine summers morning. Wasn’t timed or designed that way but so apt!
class act 👌
These are 2 songs I have on my playlist! Mr Blue Sky is especially brilliant to run to.
Mr Blue Sky is definitely a number 1 for me AlMorr! 😊
My favourite running song is ".Keep On Running" by The Spencer Davis Group recorded in 1965.
Here you go Al 😁youtu.be/pK0DbgovWZo
Added to my playlist! 👍🏽😃
The lyrics arn't actually about running although it's a great song to run to, words are about a person who is hiding from her true love and 'running' away, everytime I hear it when out a walk I have a short 2 minute run while the song is playing. the lyrics of the first verse are
"Keep on running, keep on hiding, one fine day i'am gonna be the one to make you understand, Oh, yea, I'am gonna be you man"
🤔 huh! Interesting! 👍🏽
In a good running song I’m looking rather more for a strong beat at a particular rate. I run to the beat so I have playlists for different beats-per-minute ranges, depending on slow or faster running sessions.
I just love running to the beat as it seems to give me a bounce.
A lot of dance music have strong beats that helps runners to keep to a steady pace.
definitely! Lucky 🍀 for us runners! 👍🏽😃🏃🏼♂️🏃🏽♀️
Have a look at Willow Withers on Spotify, lots of dance music and some very ambient stuff too, I don't know what beat they are, might be too fast but.
Brilliant. Will definitely do, and will think of you running while I listen! 👍🏽💚🧡💜💚
They don't all have words
LOL. I just need a beat when running. 🙏🎶🎧🥁
There are a few with words, I just like it when he sings, I was trying to link you one but couldn't work out how, I remember you linked a playlist once
I think I found a playlist of willow’s mellow pieces (see pic). Just the right thing for a slow run!
Share button of a whole playlist is behind the dot dot dots. Looking forward to listening to it whilst running.
In fact, am about to head out now!
