I’ve been struggling a bit to get going with my running lately. It hasn’t helped that I’ve had a stinky cold. This morning, I woke up feeling grotty but after breakfast, I was feeling a bit better so decided to go out for a relaxed run and enjoy myself. I was scrolling for a guided run to keep me company but nothing took my fancy. Instead, I decided to channel my post c25k consolidation time and just go with music and a watch for a timer. Classic dance anthems with Charlie Hedges loaded up. Shoes on. Headphones paired. Looked out of the window…rain. Not just a little bit of rain. Epic rain.
At that point, there were two competing desires in my head. Go out and run as planned. Sit on the sofa and stay dry, I decided on a sort of compromise. Head out for five minutes and if I was having a horrible time, turn around and come back. Five minute warm up walk and off I went!
There is something absolutely superhuman about running in the rain. Once you’ve got so wet, you can’t get any wetter it becomes amazing fun. I haven’t run in such hideous weather for a while and I’d forgotten how alive it can make you feel. Ten minutes long the gently undulating lane and I was loving it. At that point, it was starting to brighten up so I turned off to run up my favourite hill. It has the perfect combination of slopes to challenge and flat parts to recover. I do this route often and today, it felt great.
By the time I hit the top, the rain had stopped and suddenly I was HOT. Luckily the rest of the run was downhill so I enjoyed picking up a little to generate a bit of a breeze. Whether the extra effort cancelled out the cooling effect of this, I don’t know but it was great for the mood! Twenty seven minutes after I started, I reached a good place to stop and walked home. It’s a great feeling to end when you feel like you’ve got more to give.
I wonder if c25k makes us think that a run has to be thirty minutes to be a good run. Mine was excellent at twenty seven today. It would still have been just as excellent at ten minutes because I’d have made it out. Every run we do is a win, even if it doesn’t feel like it.
I’ve now dried off and popped to the library to collect a book and cash in a free coffee. I read Vassos Alexander’s first book (Don’t Stop Me Now) recently and loved it. Excited to start this one. 🏃♀️ 🏃♀️ 🏃♀️
