Thinking of going for a run in the morning 🤔🤔

Been to the gym again today and could feel my hip. But I’m desperate to go for a run in this beautiful weather. I love running at autumn time. I’m so tempted. But I don’t want to hurt my hip anymore ☹️☹️☹️ My hip isn’t painful when I run it’s just afterwards. Any advice gratefully received 🙏🙏🙏

I don't think that you should run while your hip is still sore particularly after the run, if that sore feeling persists I would advise you to go to your doctor.

Hip can be a number of issues. Arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis,

labral tears, hip impingement. Have you seen a consultant? A lot of hip problems in runners are related to glute and core issues and can be resolved with the correct programme of therapy. Get your GP to refer you to ortho for an assessment and if it can be rehabilitated, find a specialist hip physio or pt. I was out for 5 months with hip, had MRI and X rays. I have hip impingement, found a good hip PT and I'm now running pain free. Hope you get sorted

🙏🙏for replying with such positive info. I’m going to try to get to actually see my gp but I fear I won’t manage it. He was an orthopaedic surgeon so would be great if I could even speak to him 🤞

Hi  Scruff55 , Sorry to hear your hip's playing up again, how frustrating.

I suspect you've just been overdoing things a bit. If you're in in pain, please don't run. How about going for a walk instead? You'd be outside to enjoy the season, and would be on the move, just more gently.

From your previous posts I believe you've already seen an orthopaedic specialist. If so, is it possible for you to get a further appointment with them, or possibly phone or video advice, or a physio recommendation or referral?

Final thought: are your shoes providing you sufficient support and comfort, and not wearing or worn out?

Editing to add: I've just read more of your previous posts and see that a physio had mentioned hip bursitis. If this is the case, then I believe that a combination of rest and appropriate exercises/physiotherapy would be recommended. Running wouldn't be advised right now. But as I have no medical qualifications, and you've already consulted health profesionals about your hip, I really think you need to see what they say.

Thank you so much for your reply and for your research into my posts. I’m just getting worried that I might not be able to run any more which I would find devastating. I’m going to try to contact my gp —not an easy task where I live at the moment and see if he can refer me either to consultant orthopaedic or physio or both. 🙏🙏🙏

Are you by any chance feeling some or any of this: What if I can't run any more? I need to run to prove that I can, even if it's ouchy. I want to run too, not rest. If I rest it'll be harder to run because I'll have lost fitness. So I'd better run, only I should rest.

I faceplanted four months ago and messed up my leg. It took three months for me to feel I was getting back to normal, and I'm still not back to where I was. It also messed up my thinking - see above! However, although it can be really frustrating, if you rest, take things slowly and correctly, and don't overdo it, you're more likely to be able to continue running than if you keep going regardless.

Good luck with getting a referral.

I’m anxious as I’m fairly certain that I’ll need a total hip replacement in the near future and that I’ll have to give up running because of that. I just wish I’d found the running bug earlier. I only started running in 2019 and now I realise that I might lose it. I’m trying to be realistic and gracefully accept getting older and things falling off or wearing out but it’s hard🤣☹️🤣☹️🤣☹️ Thank you for your support it does help. I know I need to rest but I also know that if I don’t exercise then other medical issues will start to kick in such as BP going up and blood sugar levels creeping up too ☹️☹️

If it helps, a schoolfriend of mine (aged 61) has recently had a knee replacement, following two hip replacements, and is hoping to be skiing again in early 2023! He cycles too. Another friend who's 75 has had a knee replacement and regularly goes hiking. OK, not everyone's the same, but don't write things off just yet 😀
