Running with water bottle

Just lately I have noticed pins and needles in my hand when gripping my water bottle during a run. Anyone else get this?

Does anyone use a belt or bottle carrier whilst running to free up hands? perhaps I just need to swap hands more, but wondered if a belt may be the way to go?

Also, any recommendations for belts?

TIA

I personally never carry a bottle in my hand .Infact I don't take water if it's under a 10k run .

But on longer runs I have 2 options, I have a belt which will hold 2 small bottles or for an even longer run I will wear my hydration vest but I don't use the bladder, I use soft bottles with it

I never take water with me unless the run's going to be over 90 minutes long (possibly a bit less in hot weather). Holding a bottle would affect my balance.

On longer runs I have a hydration "vest" (actually a backpack) with a bladder.

I don’t take water either but then again I haven’t run more than 6k as yet. I just drink plenty before and after the run. Took a bottle once and it was just annoying. Happy running.

Thanks for the comments. As I am diabetic, I need to watch my hydration and tend to find myself needing water fairly regularly during runs, even 5k or less so prefer to have water with me. particularly in this warmer weather. In winter it may be less important. Diabetics need more hydration to deal with glucose levels.

I run with water, I can manage without but I feel better if I sip frequently and my son feels ill if he doesn't drink during a run.

We have small 300ml bottles with a handle on so it's quite comfortable. I actually find the hand without the water bottle gets tingly!

I'd look at different bottles with different hand holds, maybe a smaller bottle or one of those ones that go on your back with a straw that comes around.

Take an old bottle, leave it somewhere on a lap and drink from it each time you pass. Or just carry a little bottle in a pocket. Or do both. You will find that you won't need much as you progress. I find I only use one normally for anything over 7K. But I have been out of action for 6 weeks recently and have taken a small bottle with me on my road to recovery. It is really just a comforter! But probably essential when you are diabetic.

I’ve just found out that there are water bottle belts and I’m going to be looking at getting one as my fingers swell when I run - there’s lots of reviews online - I have a good read of them before I buy anything.

Definitely a belt! Get one with sections for phone keys n SMALL water bottle, and hydrate mouth every kilometer, spitting water out. This way you stay hydrated n also carry v little water. Drink lots before you run.Good luck - this works

I have to disagree. Rinsing and spitting water out might help avoid a dry mouth, but that's not the same as being properly hydrated for running. That means drinking sufficient water (maybe 2-3L, so as your pee is pale straw-coloured) every day, not just on run days, rather than glugging quantities of water just before running.

Hi there RedhillRunner How far are you into the C25K programme?

It's a good idea to not carry something in your hands when running. How many times do we trip / fall when carrying something and try to 'save' the carried item rather than ourselves 🤣

It is better to drink (water 👼) little and often the day before your run and not lots just before you go out the door.

What do you think on balance you might change for your future runs?
