Beginner & Swelling Problem...

Hi everyone,

I'm a 27 year old woman, used to be very fit when I was younger but largely sedentary for years now! I've started C25K to get back into fitness and I'm on Week 3 but have noticed some strange swelling.

I have swollen lumps both sides of my ankles, both sides of my knees, and in a triangular muscle in my lower back (the piriformis according to Google!).

It's all completely painless but not going away. Elevation temporarily helps my ankle swelling but it just comes back.I have no previous injuries and am slim (so I don't think additional weight is a factor). I've never experienced this before in all the various sports I used to do.

I know no one can provide medical advice but just wondering whether this is a common running thing?! C25K is the only lifestyle change I've made so it must be down to this. If anyone has had similar would massively appreciate knowing whether this is an issue or what I can do to resolve it. In the meantime I'm carrying on as usual and hoping it will start going!

Thanks in advance.

As you say, we are not able to give medical advice... and I have never read a post with anything quite like this happening.

The swelling which does abate slightly may, I say may, indicate, over exertion with an exercise that you are unused to, causing a fluid build up, but...our advice here is, to go and get this checked out by a medical expert GP or Sports Physio... anything unusual like this, just really needs checking out.

When you know what is happening, there will be ideas for moving on and easing the problem.

In the meantime, I suggest not running until you have done that, as sometimes when we carry on, we may cause further problems.

It is going to be warm over the next few days, so a good chance to get sorted before it cools down again:)

I can only reiterate the advice given by Oldfloss which would be to get this checked out with your GP or a Sports physio Before continuing with the program .No one here could really give you any other advice .

Hopefully you can get an answer on this soon and continue with the program.

This seems unusual. I have no idea what could be causing this and think the best advice would be to discuss with your GP, you can put it in an online consultation. Usually I'd say sports physio, but it doesn't sound as if it's painful or biomechanical. Hope you get it sorted out soon 😊

Thanks everyone, really appreciate your replies this morning! I've been enjoying C25K so much that I was hoping it was a common thing which would just disappear but you're all correct. So I've booked in with my GP on Tuesday and will stop in the meantime.

Best to get it checked, I do have hypermobility so perhaps I need to do some additional joint strengthening exercises first.

I'll write the outcome here if it is related to running in case it helps anyone else.

Thanks again!

Good to hear you have the GP appointment!Ahh ... Yes, very possibly related to the hypermobility.

Hope you can get a plan soon 🤞

Weirdly enough as I was running this morning after I replied I did wonder if you might have hypermobility. Gkas your going to keep us informed 😉

I have had swellings around the ankle bone on both sides (although not both sides at the same time). They also went down overnight but returned, and were not particularly painful (unless firmly prodded by the physio!) Both times it was an indication of tendonitis and the first time I'm sure I made it worse by continuing to run because I wasn't in that much pain. I would definitely get advice before continuing.

Hi, I’ve only had swelling of the fingers when I run (like big fat sausages) but when I asked the nurse at my GP she said she’d never heard of it and didn’t seem too bothered 🙄 You’re doing the right thing getting checked out as you don’t want to cause an injury and put yourself out of running by making it worse. Hope all okay 👍🏻

I got puffy ankles when I started. It lasted for a while but I kept going with the programme and a healthier diet, and matters improved.

Drink plenty of water 👍🙂
