Week being poorly-where to start again

Hi

I was so proud of myself for getting to week 7 and then I got ill so have not run for just over a week. Got out today and while it felt really good to be out I inky managed 10 minutes with a couple of short walking breaks. Should I repeat week 6 or drop back further or should I just have a couple more 'get back into it runs' and see how I feel in a week?

Sorry to hear you’ve been ill. I would keep doing some really easy runs, listening to your body and walking if you need to. Then see where you are in a week or two. If you think you need a bit longer to recover, there’s no need to hurry back. Some wise person told me that runs are patient-they wait for us to be ready. You won’t lose much fitness over a couple of weeks so you might find you’re fine to pick up where you were.

I think maybe you are not quite back to full strength. So easy on yourself...

As MissUnderstanding says.. ( I think it may have been me that said it to her... ).. the runs wait... they are so good at it... thank goodness.

When you have done a few walks and maybe a little jogette eventually. head out. Listen to your body and see how it feels.

I have had a week on strong antibiotics and I still even after finishing the course, am only just getting my strength back.

When we do get out again... those runs are all the sweeter. x

Welcome to the forum and well done on your progress.

As stated in the guide to the plan, you lose no significant condition in the first two weeks of non running. After that loss of condition is gradual.

All any of us can do after a lay off is to go out for a gentle run and see what we can comfortably manage, then use C25k or something similar to rebuild stamina and resistance to injury.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5....

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

It is hard going back after an illness but these wise posts will guide you.

You are in the right place. We will always have trips, illnesses etc and it's just ensuring we get back to running/ jogging/ walking...supporting our body and building up our energy again.
