Different treadmill, different experience?

For the past 6 or so months I've been running and graduated from C25K on a treadmill which has been fine, no issues at all. I've been regularly running on this gym treadmill at roughly 10kmh with no issues (my best 5k time on treadmill is 29m30s)

However this morning I went to a new gym, set up my treadmill as I would normally (10kmh) and I had to give up after 5 minutes! It was super difficult! Sweating more than usual, my earphones kept falling out, it was a disaster!

Just wondering if anyone else has ever had a similar experience changing between treadmills? I was just shocked as felt like even though it was the exact same speed and conditions I was suffering so much!

Not all treadmills are made equal!

You'd think 10 km/h on one would be 10 km/h on another, but not so - this is all about calibration.

Also ... the room temperature could have been different, which would have affected your heart rate and perception of effort.

Another thing ... are you sure this treadmill was set to 10 km/h or 10 mph ?

It was definitely 10kmh my usual walking speed is 5.8kmh, my fall back speed for warm up/cool down and that felt normal.

I thought it could be maybe as it's a new gym (literally opened Monday) that the new treadmills aren't as 'worn' as the ones I'm used to!

It's no big issue, it happens! I just felt a little disheartened after months of great work, nearly 35kg lost and suddenly feeling like I was back on Week 2 of C25K!

WOAH, 35kg? That's huge and mightly impressive - well done and congratulations. That's a life-changer.

As for this new gym and treadmill, make sure to go at whatever speed-setting gives you the same feel/effort as your other one, regardless of what distance you end up doing.

Thanks! Usually it's hard to tell, I normally know after about 5 mins of running as I get into a rhythm.

I think when I go tomorrow I'll just take it slow, maybe redownload the app and see about trying a week 5 run or something at a lower speed and see how I get on.

Congratulations on that amazing weight loss ! That's incredible 👏👏👏

I would echo what John_W has said and that is to go by perceived effort.

It's likely a more accurate way then trying to alighn numbers on a different machine

Noted! Will defo not let it stop me, will give it another go in the next day or so and see how I get on :)

This is probably a silly question but could it of been set at an incline that you were unaware of.? That would certainly make a difference to the effort you have to put in

No I did have that thought and checked the incline, it was set to 0 and definitely level with the floor/other machines!
