How do you persuade yourself to run when you actually feel a little bit deflated and very tired. The thought of running when I get from home is definitely not top of my list 🤦🏼

Hi neets00 just remember how far you have come to get to where you are and why you started this journey. I’m a new graduate and have a cold right now, some days I can’t be bothered but I run 20 mins that’s the max for me right now and I do weights etc the way I see it I have worked too hard to get to where I am and no cold will stop me. I don’t want to go back to where I was def not so I push though once done I feel great. I have a list of why I started this journey and sometime refer to it to keep me in check. Give yourself a rest day and I’m sure you will feel better. Good luck

Wow thank you so much .. that makes so much sense. I graduated a few weeks ago and I don't want to fall back just carry on forwards 😀. Well done you, you should be well proud of yourself

I Dedicate my runs to someone in the family, friends, someone will illness etc gives me the motivation to keep going.

That is a lovely idea ❤️

I don't! Making myself go out for a run when I don't feel like it is one thing, making myself go out for a run when I'm exhausted is another. I'd rather have a rest day and run better another time.

Trouble is I rested all over the weekend 😲

In the weeks following graduation it's easy to think that you should always do as much, or more, than you've done before. Realistically that's impossible, as I discovered!

So if it's more "don't feel like it" than actual tiredness, then go and do a short run. But if you really are tired, then an extra rest day will do you more good. You won't lose fitness overnight.

If I've planned to run in the evening I try to factor in preparation during the day, have I topped on my water? Timing meals as best as possible. Sometimes goes sideways with meetings etc but usually gives me a push since I've made preparation effort. When home it's a quick wash in cold water to liven myself up then gear on so it's just the actual heading out the door obstacle. Sometimes it's just one of those days, drained, no motivation... Have an extra rest day and try to get a better sleep then reset next morning.

Thank you so much, some great tips there, absolutely love them

No probs, I found a few days I just felt worn down but didn't want to lose momentum so soon more so as I was enjoying getting out. The preparation and getting gear on was something that was suggested to me from another runner. Once I was out the door walking I felt more energetic for the run but really its an individual thing as to what works for you... Running should be enjoyable not a chore. You won't lose fitness having consecutive rest days if needed so don't stress if you don't get out. Think it was Oldfloss that said something along the lines of: runs are patient, they will wait for you 🙂

You are so right .. just got back from my run and my momentum completely changed once I changed out of my work gear and put my running stuff on 😀

Apparently you never regret the runs you do...only the ones you don't!

Hi I run after work and generally I’m not in the mood after completing a days work ! 😃 However I don’t think about it I just put on that gear and out I go out within 10 mins of finishing work, I work from home . I must admit sometimes it’s as struggle but I always feel great afterwards. It clears the stresses of the day for me .My treat time is the weekend and never run then but we are all different . If you give it a miss it won’t hurt you do what you feel is good ! 🏃‍♂️😉😃

That's exactly what I did yesterday, came straight in from work quick hello to everyone then straight out, so glad I did it. Weekends are my two days off as well 😀

Thank you so much

Sometimes I just don’t go if I’m super tired.

Sometimes I just decide I’m only going out for a short time, I’m going to run extra slowly and I’ll stop after fifteen minutes if I’m not feeling it. Usually by that point I’m actually enjoying it.

Occasionally, I’ll just go for a “get it done” mindset and just push through the “not particularly feeling it today” feeling. I tell myself that it doesn’t matter if my head isn’t loving it, the miles are still happening in my legs and it’s good for me. I don’t have too many of those runs though and I’ve done it mainly when I’m trying to get going after a break or when there’s something specific coming up. Good music really helps on that sort of run.

Often for me, the worst bit is just starting and once I’m going, it’s usually good and it’s pretty much always a good feeling when it’s the end!

Great advice thank you. Totally agree those first few minutes are definitely the worst, I literally have forgot how to run 🤣. The relief when that goes

I have a few little tips I use when I feel like it - firstly, I remind myself that I am able to get out when so many are not, and that I am so lucky to be able to do so. Then, I think of my late parents and how supportive they were in everything I ever did, and I dedicate it to them. Finally, I promise myself a little treat for when I get back. It may be a [very un PC] bacon and egg sarnie - convincing myself that by running I now deserve one! - or an evening watching some favourite old television or film, or even a trip to the pub with my wife and dog. Goos luck, be pleased with yourself that you are out there running and that you are able to call yourself a runner when talking to people.

What a lovely response, thank you so much and I shall definitely take so much of what you said on board

I find that changing in to my running gear before I leave work helps. Then it’s just a quick hello to the family as I warm up, and out of the door when I get home. I’ve learnt not to let myself sit down - 5 minutes can easily turn into an hour or more for me 😊

Definitely don't sit down... That run for me would not happen at all that evening 🤣

I misread the title as "Need a litre bottle of 'get up and go'"

There’s tired and there’s tired, if I’m running after work I have to plan beforehand, have something that can go from fridge to oven then dinner is sorted and will cook while I run. If it’s just me I run round the roads locally and go a different way. I went through a very tired period of time and really wanted to run more often so I promised myself I’d run 10 minutes after work and longer on days off, so after warm up walk off i went, but my maths is rubbish so after 10 minutes I found myself a way from home so turned round and had to turn round and run 10 minutes home again
