Baffled & disappointed 😔.

W8R1 ran 28 mins first time & 5 min brisk walk. And there were some hills again 🤣!

BUT I AM BAFFLED as this has recorded 0.9Km! No way! I ran for nearly half an hour; my Apple Watch says I ran 2.6 miles. What’s going on?

Sounds like your device may have lost GPS connection.

Ah ok thank you. I was in a woods!

That's probably why , as roseabi suggests connect watch to strava That's what I do then it will uploaded to Strava from your watch

Ah ok, I had no idea I could 🤷‍♀️. I’ll research that now, thanks!

Have you connected your Apple watch to Strava? Your watch potentially will pick up the satellites signal better than an app running on a phone tucked away in your pocket.

I have not connected them , I didn’t know I could. But that makes perfect sense; watch on my bare arm vs phone squashed in a bumbag with car keys; I went deep into a woods!

Trees are notorious for messing with GPS!

If you connect your watch to Strava you won't need to bother starting a run on Strava on your phone any more.

Good run, btw xxx

Oh wow !I didn’t know.

I’ll attempt to synch them then!

Oh thanks re ‘good run’; that’s kind.

My watch said 2.6miles; I just looked & that is 4.18K 😃!!

Helen, first of all, well done!

Secondly ... you had 2 devices telling you 2 different distances.

You ran for 28 minutes.

Just thinking about that for a moment ...

- 1 device says 0.9 km (900 metres)

- 1 device say 2.6 miles (4.18 km)

Why did you end up so disappointed? Did you really think that the 0.9km measure was the correct one?

hells_bells2207Graduate in reply to John_W

Thank you for the well done . I guess I just wanted Strava to be saying the same & as it didn’t I started doubting how long I had actually run.

I have never looked at my watch for the C25K runs but only did today when I saw 0.9K.

I keep thinking maybe that was right & maybe I was slow. But I don’t think so.

As a sanity-check, next time you don't trust what your tech has told, why not go onto a mapping site, e.g. Google Maps and manually measure the distance of your run? Very easy and quite accurate :-)

Fantastic idea. Not used that before but will check it out.

As roseabi says, just sync your watch to Strava and you wont need to worry about starting both your watch and Strava on your phone before your run.

When I first started I had a fitbit watch with no GPS, Strava on my android phone as well as NRC. Blimey, my start buttons were everywhere ! 🤣🤣🤣

Don't stress it! Right now my Strava's refusing to record any distance at all, despite rechecking all settings, uninstalling and reinstalling, switching phone off and on. So I'm auto-uploading from my Garmin.

Fwiw, I never recorded any distance or pace or anything until after I'd completed C25K as I knew I'd get hung up on stats.

I've now decided to make a point of not recording every run. Just because it isn't on Garmin, or Strava, or posted on forum, it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Please don't be disappointed! It sounds like a great run, however far you went! I have a very mixed relationship with tracking my runs and only track them sometimes. It can be very positive and help with goals, but at other times it can lead to feeling quite disappointed and de-motivated. I can see that it's frustrating that your tech didn't work though!

Thank you so very much. Also if the Apple Watch is accurate, it says 2.6 miles; that is 4.1 K!!

So if so I’m very pleased!

That is a long way in 28 minutes!

You're well above average for this stage of the course. Make sure you're not overdoing it.

There's a big paradox in running: if you want to run faster (safely), you need to have run slower for longer. I've experienced this myself: my pace gradually improved as I did more and more distance.

A word of warning: do not "push" to get that round 5km in 30 minutes. I did. I was so close time-wise that I went for it on the final run. I shouldn't have. I got injured and couldn't run for a month.

Thank u for sharing ur experience..I will keep that in mind too. Have been thinking if i will be able to do 5k in wk9 or not.

Well done on your run.

You might be better off just ignoring distance covered, since C25k is a duration based programme and as you run for longer you may have to pace yourself differently, so you will not necessarily run further on each run.

Keep running, keep smiling.

Thank you IannodaTruffe . That’s actually a good idea, especially for W8 & W9, W8R2 next!

Wow 4.18km in hills, I would be very proud if it was me. I will try to time mine tomorrow, it will be wayyyyy less.I haven't been tracking my runs and measuring my progress based on how I could not run more than 100mtrs to be able to run for 25mins now!

Well done for running for 28 minutes😃. I use the Decathlon Coach smartphone app for running which tells me audibly if the GPS connection has been lost.

I have an idea that GPS uses multiple satellite triangulation for accurate positioning. If you are picking up only one satellite, then it may give a false GPS location. Not that distance really matters but dos any of your kit measure number of paces as well? This might help with a comparison of distance if you are in any doubt.

nowster profile image
nowsterGraduate in reply to LanciaA

You need at a minimum signals from three satellites to work out position; four for position and height.

The satellites themselves essentially broadcast a very accurate time signal. The very complex mathematics is done in the watch or phone.

Your post has 2 lines about your huge achievement and over 3 about the watch problem... firstly a huge well done on 33 mins and with hills! forget the tech stuff.... You don't need recognition for a map pic you smashed it! 👏

Thank you So right. I should forget the distance & whether which is right & just think as you say that I ran 28 mins & walked briskly 5 mins & with more hills!

Can’t wait to run a flat course 🤣!
